Living in a culture where people do things out doors in smaller groups does cut down on disease spread. If the young bucks are planning on getting up at 4AM on Saturday morning to go out and shoot something edible, it discourages them from engaging in close contact with lots of random people Friday night, and on Friday night shooting something that is not edible (though it might seem like it needs killing at the time).
But many generally peaceful hunts.

We lived in Pierre, the Capital, from 1950 to 1963. My brother was friends with Gov Joe Foss’s son and he spent time in the Gov mansion. Pierre was a great place to grow up. Went pheasant hunting with my dad and his buddies. Ahhh...memories
