Most likely, she let her dogs go off leash in a place where a leash was required.
I’ve seen a quilled dog before, lost an eye. They don’t look happy....

I took dog to the vet for this once. $600. Next time was the plyers. Then they got into to the porcupines every other year instead of every two weeks.

I once saw a program on Animal Planet (or one of those channels) that showed how a porcupine jams its quills into the face of an animal. A robot dog was used, which moved towards the rear of the porcupine, and the porcupine promptly used its tail to slap the robot dog’s face hard.

This is our Elder Statesman, 'Lakota' who is 10 years old. Treeing Walker Coon Hound. Grand Nite Champion (which is supposed to mean that he's smart!) See the marks on his face? Porcupine. Twice. Dumb@ss! He lost part of his ear in a bar fight. ;)

Mt dog used to chase at horses until one got him in the ribs with a well aimed kick. He never bothered them again.

Always! He bonked his opponent with one of his many trophies which the bar keeps on display for him! ;)
You know, like Bowling and Softball Trophies - back when we were ALLOWED to congregate and PARTICIPATE in LIFE?!?!

I’ve seen far worse. Mrs. C works in a veterinary clinic here in Southeast Alaska. Dogs get into porcupines all the time. Repeatedly. They never learn

The trick is to clip the ends off the quills so they deflate - then pull ‘em out after maybe a few hours.
