Besides the obvious changes in formant and technical reach due to the coronavirus pandemic, Jimmy Kimmels third time as host saw a lot of firsts at the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards last night.
For one, there was a host again after the TV Academy show ceremony tried to be like the 2019 Oscars and go without a frontman or frontwoman. Then there was the unprecedented total sweep by Canadian comedy Schitts Creek of every category it was nominated in. That sweep also saw a first for an import from the Great White North in a top series category. Additionally, with big victories for HBOs Watchmen, Sundays Emmys had record wins for African-American actors. And, speaking of HBO, the premium cablers upset in the Lead Actress in a Drama Series by Euphorias Zendaya made the Disney alum at 24 years old the youngest winner ever in the category. Once again, the Emmys were facing off against Sunday Night Football, just like last year.
However, with the Emmys also matched up again the NBA playoffs for the first time with the Los Angeles Lakers beating the Denver Nuggets in a dramatic second game of the Western Conference, there was one particular similarity and difference this year.
As predicted by Kimmel, the Emmys hit an all-time ratings low last night, dropping 14% in viewers and 33% among adults 18-49 from the previous all-time low of last year.
In early numbers, the more than three-hour ceremony snared an audience of 5.11 million and a 1.0 rating in the key demographic for ABC. Now those numbers will be adjusted and updated in final data expected later today, but it is still going to be a steep and perhaps impossible climb to top 2019s lows.
Broadcast on Fox, the 71st Primetime Emmy Awards ended up with 6.9 million viewers and a 1.6 rating among the 18-49s That was a significant double digit drop from the 2018 Emmys on NBC, which aired on a Monday.
Looking at the last time ABC hosted the Emmys, last nights show was down 47% in viewership and 60% in the key demo from the early numbers of the 2016 ceremony. Marking Kimmels second time as Emmy host, that September 18, 2018 show, which was held on a Sunday and did face SNF, ended up in the final numbers with an audience of 11.38 million and a demo rating of 2.8, both lows at the time.
We will of course update this years Primetime Emmy Awards ratings as we get more data.
In terms of last nights Sunday Night Football, the NBC and NFL flagship show had the hometown Seattle Seahawks beating the now Tom Brady-less New England Patriots 35 30 in an audience free game due to COVID-19 safety protocols. Dominated by the Emerald Citys QB Russell Wilson, the often-thrilling gridiron match-up also saw the Patriots and their QB Cam Newton struggle the whole night against the Seahawks wall of defense as you can see:
Still, with numbers certain to tick upward in the final data, the 7:20 PM ET starting SNF took a tumble.
Pulling in 12.22 million viewers in the early metrics and 3.5 in the ratings between 7 -11 PM ET, last nights big NFL game was down 17% in audience and 25% in the demo from the early numbers of last weeks SNF official season debut. That hometown win by the LA Rams over the Dallas Cowboys shifted up a bit to 18.94 million viewers and 6.2 ratings for the Comcast-owned network and the league in the final numbers.
Like the Emmy Awards, we will update SNF numbers also as they come in.
NFL: 3 hours of SJW nonsense before the game, "woke" commercials with 11 minutes of actual football.
Never understood why anyone would want to watch a bunch of millionaires slap each other on the back and hand out trophies for being nothing more that “entertainment”.
I can't speak for anything that happened before the kickoff because I was boycotting the talking heads. As for the game, the announcers were insufferable as always, but it was a great game (except for an inexplicable pass on 3rd and short late in the game that backfired) and no SJW nonsense that I could see.
Did you have blinders on?
No, I did not.
In the coveted 18-49 age group, viewership dropped 2 million — from 15.1 million at kickoff to 13.1 by the final hour. That is about a 13% drop.
Football is not taking a hit from the Chinese Plague. It’s the anti-American antics of the players.
I stopped watching professional sports several years ago in response to the players taking a knee.
I watched maybe two minutes. It was like taking a big swallow of a flat beer.
People walked out on the Cowboys, they sucked so bad, but they pulled off a win.
If my brother is an indicator Pittsburgh sucked too but managed to win.
Sucks worse when BLM used the flat beer for a spit cup!
My wife actually watched it. I happened to pass by when I saw this freak show wearing a skirt. I’m talking about a male freak show wearing a skirt. Who wants to watch that kind of garbage? Besides my wife?
Bwahahahahahaha, I did not know it was even on.
I haven't watched any games this season (and don't plan to), but I read somewhere that the league was adding big ol' SJW slogans to both end zones...
I missed have missed that part.
50 years ago today - debut of MNF
Actually last nights game between the Patriots and the Seahawks was a great game. I did not see the first 5 minutes. Missed the national anthem. I never saw anything during the time I watched that had anything woke to it.
FYI, the Pats/Seahawks game went down to the very last play of the game. With 3 seconds on the clock, the Pats had the ball on the Seattle 1-2 yard line. Seattle tackled Pats QB Newton for a 2 yard loss. Final score Pats 30 Seahawks 35.
I looked and only saw half of one message. Tuned in about two minutes before kick-off, and saw or heard little BS. They dont make a cent off of my viewership. Good game. Got to see Cam Newton get stuffed on a play a child could have predicted, to lose the game.
