You can find this fun quotation puzzle, to combat early dementia and senility in us baby boomers, in several daily publications. I challenge us with the best ones out there.

The way it works is a letter stands for another letter. For example: AXYDLBAAXR is LONGFELLOW (does not apply to today's cryptogram).

Beware, the game is very addictive. If this is your first time, don't be intimidated, you’ll be solving them all within a few days. If you’re stumped, take a break and return to it.

PLEASE DO NOT post the answer in general comments, but DO post your time and how you made out.

You can certainly send your solution to my private reply, or if you need a hint for today’s Cryptogram ASK THE GROUP FOR HELP!

I suggest printing these out and work them on paper. If you need a little help you can copy and paste it to Hal’s Helper below.

You can then work on the puzzle without using pen and paper, but I recommend that you do NOT look at the letter counter.

HAL'S CRYPTOGRAM HELPER

One last request. Feel free to post a fun or clever clue, the more tangential to the quotation the better, but please don’t put the actual words of the quote in the clue.

I found it easy, common letter, then last name of the author. And I totally agree with the quote!

Shazaam!! Kowabunga!!!

Took a (correct) at obvious middle ‘name’ got wrong vowel on 1st stab BUT it allowed the other words to rise like ashes from the ruins of ‘Detroit or Seattle’.

QUESTION of the YEAR:

Which is worse.
Getting an Atom Bomb dropped on you

OR

Many years of LIBERAL leadership?

(hint..check out 1945-60-2020 Hiroshima or Nagasaki

The name.... even though they got the middle part wrong. “O” not “A”!

It’s not really a middle name.

No, the middle letter in BCT is correct. His father was Flemish. Austrians used to say that the greatest achievement of the Austria in the 20th Century was convincing the world that Hitler was German and GPPQDWBPT was Austrian.

About a quarter of the names in the Amsterdam phone book start with BCT. It’s not even used for alphabetization. BCT GPPQDWBPT is the same as GPPQDWBPT when looking up a name. BTW, if you had taken a college music class prior to about 1980, you might have gotten the impression that the author’s name was “The Immortal GPPQDWBPT”, no BCT.

Really nice. Guessing the author made it easy. I had just played a sonata of his on the piano for a guest…
