ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Los Angeles Angels slugger Albert Pujols passed Willie Mays for fifth place on the career home run list, hitting No. 661 on Friday night against Texas.
The 40-year-old Pujols connected for a solo homer with one out in the fifth inning. He sent Wes Benjamin's fastball on a 1-2 count over the wall in left field.
Pujols has hit five homers this season. He tied Mays last Sunday at Colorado.
It is only Pujols' second home run since Aug. 4. He now trails only Barry Bonds (762), Hank Aaron (755), Babe Ruth (714) and Alex Rodriguez (696).
The Angels quickly congratulated Pujols on Twitter.

Before Ruth came along the home run record in a season was something like 28. He broke that several times in his career, finally getting to 69. Nobody has come close to doubling his best season’s home run record.
This isn’t to take anything away from Aaron and others who beat his records, but Ruth dominated the game while he was active.
I always liked him - though I haven’t watched him play in years.
I loved Willie Mays. My Dad used to hit cleanup behind him w/ the Giants on occasion. Ended up trade bait/PH status and just quit - making $5,500/year. There were 2 jobs open - RF and 1B, and he could play both. The two guys that beat him out have statues outside of whatever park it is in San Fran. McCovey and Cepeda.
My Grandmother made my Dad bring an apple pie on a plane when he made the bigs and give it to Willie. He said it was the best he ever tasted. I think he said that to all the rookie Moms. She eventually got a kiss on the cheek from him, which was a highlight of her life.
Back to Albert - I met him in Jupiter when he was still w/ the Cards. He’s as real as it gets in today’s sports world. Engaging and inquisitive is what I took away. I even told him about my Dad and he just shook his head at what they made back then.
I’m a die hard Cardinals fan and still have a Cards/Puljos t-shirt. I have to say, the Cards got the first.....and the best.....10 years of his career.
Last year when the Angels and the Cards had an inter-league series of 4 games, Mr. Puljos got a standing O every time he came to bat in St. Louis. Great man and a great fan base!

He has suffered greatly with plantar fasciitis, even getting surgery.

The Angels play in Anaheim. Anaheim ain't Los Angeles.
I would guess Bonds and Arod’s records have asterisks behind them.
Hank Aaron (755) had harder baseballs.
Babe Ruth (714) did it on soft baseballs and eating hot dogs.

All my baseball cards for those great athletes just went up in value. Leaving them for my grandchildren to help pay for their college education.

The young people think this wimpy baseball they play today is the same as the old days. You can’t even run into the catcher.
Bob Gibson and Don Drysdale would dominate these guys under the old rules. It’s the new rules that have wussified baseball, and I think the modern players do well with them.
I have nothing against Pujols. But Willie Mays was as good as it gets.
Mays, Williams, Musial, Robinson, Berra and many other baseball players of the 30’s and 40’s served in the military, esp. during WW2.
How many baseball players today (American citizens or want-to-be’s) have been in the service and how many have been in combat? Just asking.
We also must remember the late Lieutenant Colonel Jerry Coleman, United States Marine Corps, who served in WW2 and Korea. A fighter pilot, he was awarded two Distinguished Flying Crosses and 13 Air Medals for his flying prowess. He is the only MLB player who saw combat in two wars. (Ted Williams served in WW2, but did not experience combat until Korea.) Coleman is in the HOF as a broadcaster — “You can hang a star on that one!” — but as a Yankees 2nd baseman, he was the 1949 AP rookie of the year, the 1950 World Series MVP, and went to six World Series with New York, winning four. He was soft spoken, but a man’s man.
