Micky Dolenz recalls ill-fated Monkees tour with opening act Jimi Hendrix: ‘Yeah, it was kind of embarrassing’

Fifty years ago, on Sept. 18, 1970, guitar legend Jimi Hendrix died of asphyxia while intoxicated. He was only 27 years old, and his stint as a superstar lasted less than five years, but he obviously made his indelible mark — being declared by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as “arguably the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music” and by Rolling Stone as the greatest guitarist of all time.

And one of the first mainstream rock acts to recognize Hendrix’s greatness was the Monkees. Unfortunately, the Monkees’ young fans weren’t quite as enthusiastic when that TV band’s Micky Dolenz came up with the seemingly bizarre idea to hire Hendrix as the opening act for the Monkees’ first U.S. tour in 1967.

Hendrix ended up playing only seven of that tour’s 29 dates, dropping out after having to contend nightly with thousands of nasty, impatient, jeering teenyboppers. “Yeah, it was kind of embarrassing,” Dolenz admits to Yahoo Entertainment. “Jimi would go, ‘Purple haze!’ and the kids would be like, ‘We want Davy!’ He’d go, ‘Foxy lady!’ and they’d yell, ‘We. Want. The. Monkees! We. Want. The. Monkees!’ He was coming up against that very typical opening-act dilemma for anyone touring with a big headliner, really.”

Yet Carlos continues to sell new albums while Neal Schon replays Journey’s greatest hits.

What genius decided that Jimi opening for the Monkees was a good idea? LOL.

Probably the same guy running the Biden campaign....

[declared] by Rolling Stone as the greatest guitarist of all time.

I guess these a$$holes never heard of Andrés Segovia.

I think Showtime did a documentary on Hendrix. The had film of Hendrix opening for the Monkees. It was hilarious to see the little boy dressed in their best accompanied by their mothers to a Monkees concert listening to Hendrix. To say they were dumbfounded is to put it mildly.

I saw Led Zeppelin twice.

They absolutely sucked both times.

Saw GFR once and they blew the roof off the place and burned it down.

Also, if I remember correctly, according to the same documentary, it was Hendrix’s manager’s idea for him to tour with the Monkees, not Dolan’s.

Forgot about that. Clash of music there. Probably like The Partridge Family and Lynard Skynard double bill?

I remember attending an Elton John concert in the early '80s with Quarterflash as the opener. Quarterflash had a smaller, but very real following, but there wasn't a lot of overlap. EJ was close to his bottom career-wise. I think he wanted to make sure he filled the Hartford Civic Center.

I remember the lead singer from Quarterflash introducing a song saying, "I hear Hartford is a party town!". Groan, I betcha say that to all the decaying third-tier cities. That wasn't going to get the mostly EJ crowd engaged.

Yeah, there are stories of Clapton seeing Jimi as some pub or small venue in the UK, and basically saying “OMG that was incredible, and we’re really behind the curve.”

Here for instance:

Just something I DGEed quickly.

Paul McCartney went to see Jimi play, and he played Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club band, a few days before the album’s release.

I saw “Derek and the Dominoes” and Eric’s opening act was Santana.

When Clapton, came out on stage, he strapped on his guitar, did a minor tuning...then wailed into the opening licks of “Layla”. Incredible moment!

At the end, Santana came out and did a duet with Clapton, the song from “Tommy” (”Acid Queen”).

IMO, Santana was MUCH better than Clapton that night.

I went to an Oingo Boingo concert after they just put out their quasi-funk album "Good for the Soul".

The opening act that was almost booed off the stage?

Red Hot Chili Peppers

...and yes I was one of the people booing the loudest!
