The public elementary and secondary schools in the District of Columbia spent $30,115 per pupil during the 2016-2017 school year, according to Table 236.75 in the Department of Education's "Digest of Education Statistics."

But only 23% of the eighth graders in the D.C. public schools were proficient or better in reading in 2019, according to the department's National Assessment of Educational Progress, or NAEP, tests.

An even more interesting statistic would be the results from 10th or 11th grade. But, 23% proficiency means that 77% are below proficient. So over 3/4ths are below grade level at 8th grade. And the dirty little secret is that ‘Proficient’ today is not what it was 40 years ago. The standards have lowered considerably since then.

$30,000/pupil per year is buying the taxpayers 23% grade-level readers.

My kids went to a private french school in San Francisco for 1/3 that amount 5 years ago. Half of the graduating class went to Ivy League, Cal or Stanford.

According to https://www.nationsreportcard.gov/ 23% in DC are proficient at math, so they're mostly proficient. < /s>

This is disgusting. I graduated high school in VA. My father was a 3 war Vet when I went to college. It was mandatory to graduate high school. I had several 21 year old friends plus a 22 year old O-6’s son in my senior class.

Reading is White.

If the KKK tried to design a plan to keep blacks down, they couldn't come up with a better one than America's public schools.

We’re lucky that it was as high as 23% and that was probably at the elite mostly white schools.

I can't remember how long ago it was, but Thomas Sowell wrote a brilliant article echoing your thoughts. I can't remember all the details.

But consider. If you hated blacks and wanted them to have bad educations, don't join the KKK and try to intimidate them, just have the students attend Democrat schools. The Democrats will do the rest.

If you wanted blacks to die from violence, just make sure blacks live in Democrat cities. And make sure that black women buy in to abortion. The deaths of blacks will be in the MILLIONS!

There is no way possible, that considering the catastrophic damage done to the black community, that the KKK can even begin to be compared to what the Democrat Party delivered to blacks in terms of mortality rates of their young people, shoddy educations, and unending grinding poverty.

Whatchu mean Willis?...mostly white schools?

In 1965 there were only 2 mostly white HS in DC; Western HS (about 75:25%)a block or so from Georgetown Univ. Hospital and Woodrow Wilson (about 95+%) located in Tenleytown.

Western was changed to the Duke Ellington HS for Performing Arts, Wilson remains though I have no idea as to mix.

Western had number of second & third tier foreign embassy staff kids. Wilson had mostly the mandarin class with one or two cabinet member spawn, Dean Rusk's son, a lousy baseball player of the "do you know who I am" class. .

"What the heck are the public schools spending the money on?"

My admiration to you for being able to make sure your child gets a great education. Your question is a great one also. What in the hell are the students and parents getting for that 30,000 dollars? A 23% proficiency rate? SOMEONE NEEDS TO GO TO JAIL!

In 6th grade (1963-64) I turned in 50 book reports, most in the class. A few years later, I discovered cars and girls.

.....................................................

63-64, 6th. grade? I had already graduated from high school before then. I musta been smarter than you.

HA!

sounds like new math. 30K ‘per student’ but how much went to administrative expenses, construction contracts, pension funds and golden parachutes, and how much went directly into classroom materials?

I’m lucky in the fact that I was gifted in Reading.

At age three, I was reading newspapers out loud. At age five, I loved Edgar Allan Poe, Stephen King and even read some Harlequin Romances.

I don’t know, Reading just came as natural to me as breathing. In school, I was always in the top Reading groups.

I wasn’t as fortunate in math. I was terrible in Math, except for Fractions and Algebra. I actually enjoyed those subjects. Weird.

I was also good in Foreign Languages.

Math (Except Algebra) and Science were my problem areas. Although, I admit that if I had studied more and partied less, I could have done better.

I lived in a very small town but, luckily, our school was very good and nationally ranked. The school offered special help in Math and Science and I took advantage of that.

23% is beyond pathetic. Unacceptable.
