Against the backdrop of large-scale social justice demonstrations that included Black Lives Matter t-shirts, a giant social justice banner, an entire team standing for the “black national anthem,” and at least 20 players kneeling in protest during the actual national anthem, the Steelers-Giants MNF contest saw a 27% drop from last year.
The second game of the Monday Night Football double-header, saw another notable drop of 2.5 million viewers from last year’s mark.
These numbers are bad, needless to say. However, the full context of how bad they are can’t be appreciated until you factor in two notable variables that have been included in this year’s rating formula which should be helping the NFL, but aren’t.
First, as Outkick reports, roughly 1.2 million fans aren’t attending the games live. Which, in theory, should add to the television numbers since it would be assumed that those fans would be watching at home. Second, speaking of the home, out-of-home viewers are now accounted for in the ratings process for the first time.

My point was that the 20% is likely worse than face value, because there have been more and more people tuning out since Kap etc. About 3-4 years of this. I’m curious what ratings were like the year before Kap compared to now?
Trouble is, I fully suspect that tv ratings are being twisted to fit narratives.
I am not missing pro sports whatsoever. Realizing how much time I wasted on them. Enjoying free time more

I don’t understand the cheer leading around here for business failures. Yes, I find all the BLM and kneeling shenanigans distasteful and stupid. I probably only watch about an hour total of football a week, down considerably from mhy younger years.
I can nod my head and say yup, you promote this stupid crap and your ratings will suffer. I’m glad. Usually smart businessmen adjust and get back to basics. Maybe they won’t.
But I do feel for the thousands of people employed by the NFL and other major sports leagues. I have many friends that run bars and restaurants that are suffering The huge sports crowds that were the life blood of their business aren’t there. It’s awful.
It’s fine if you make the choice to not watch. But I like to bond with my teenage kids over football. We participate in fantasy leagues and knock-out pools. It’s fun. If it isn’t your cup of tea then fine. No one will make you watch. It’s pure leisure activity. Go for a hike or paint a picture or read a book. You can shut your TV off but you don’t have to route for an entire industry to fail just because you don’t like it.

Well I could give a hell less. I don’t watch the stinking NFL anymore. I hope their entire TV ratings crash into the bowels of hell. AND, there is NO black national anthem!! There is only ONE national anthem and it is the Star Spangled Banner.
