Against the backdrop of large-scale social justice demonstrations that included Black Lives Matter t-shirts, a giant social justice banner, an entire team standing for the black national anthem, and at least 20 players kneeling in protest during the actual national anthem, the Steelers-Giants MNF contest saw a 27% drop from last year.
The second game of the Monday Night Football double-header, saw another notable drop of 2.5 million viewers from last years mark.
These numbers are bad, needless to say. However, the full context of how bad they are cant be appreciated until you factor in two notable variables that have been included in this years rating formula which should be helping the NFL, but arent.
First, as Outkick reports, roughly 1.2 million fans arent attending the games live. Which, in theory, should add to the television numbers since it would be assumed that those fans would be watching at home. Second, speaking of the home, out-of-home viewers are now accounted for in the ratings process for the first time.

Die, NFL.
Good riddance.

How much were the ratings down in the last 3-4 years?
20% really isn’t that much, but if last few years was 20-40%, then you’re really biting into revenue. In fact, you’re running losses.
They’ll expect a very large raise when they get their Social Justice ,LOL
I hope the nfl goes bankrupt and they are all left penniless and doing low level jobs the rest of their lives.
I mean thats what communism will get everyone, be the model and lose your miliionaire capitalist jobs and work the work of a lowly proud prole.
N F Who?
Maybe they can hire Colin back as a fry guy.
It is 27% and a lot because they are adding in ratings from all media formats now and last year was just television sets.
Crash them down to 100%. Let them play to stadiums full of cardboard cutout fans. Then let them die like the XFL x2.
Only 20%? 80% are selling OUR birthright for a mess of pottage.
bump
OVER 27% and adding in all formats!
The ratings should have been huge due to the COVID shutdowns and no sports really being played. That the ratings dropped should have the MFL in a well-deserved panic.
The owners know this is happening and surely expected it but they also believe that the revolution is going to prevail and they want to be on the right side of it instead of having shame placards hung around their necks before they are shot in “struggle” sessions. It won’t work.
Inexplicably, some of those still tuning in have FR logins.
Probably. I heard Bill O’Reilly the other day say he was still going to watch the Jets and Giants, but not the other teams. Come on, Bill!
I’m surprised how easy my first “NFL Free” Sunday (and Monday) was.
Good riddance.
Will never watch them again.
