So I just watched the documentary on Netflix. Im thinking that this is the major problem we have as a society. We are a user that is being sold to the highest bidder and its changing our society in a bad way. What are tour thoughts?
I don’t do, and never have done social media such as Twitter and Facebook.
I believe both are toxic, especially Facebook. A third...yes, a third of all divorce filings as long ago as 2011 included the word “Facebook”.
You can get by without it. We all should get by without it.
I need to quit a bad habit.. help! But, please, don’t suggest I give up the habit!
I do understand where you are coming from. Being from the generation that was the first to experience personal computers, bag phones and computerized components on motor vehicles its a tough decision to refrain from actively participating.
I despise Fakebook, Instacrap and Twitter. I use all but twitter for some form of advertising my business. I dont pay for advertising so essentially it only goes out to people I know but it does generate some business.
All social media has become a playground of negativity. It used to be sharing photos and interacting with old Navy and High School buddies. Im seriously contemplating eliminating the applications much like Ive already done for professional sports. Would not like the withdrawals though.
If you must be on for business reasons then do what you need to do and log off.
I was happily disconnected for most of the long weekend. It was refreshing. Did some karaoke, socializing with friends in person and even a nice meal without phone service. Thank goodness for being in the sticks of Georgia.
I could and should log off after posting.
That wasn’t near my point. You’re using others to deceive yourself.
Touring's OK, but airline tickets and Hotel prices are way too high.
I don’t see it as a tough decision. My wife watches television news all day long. All day. It is poison. I don’t watch television at all. I stopped more than 20 years ago.
And it isn’t that I am a Luddite. I work in IT, and am working with some great cutting edge technology in my field. I was one of the first people anyone in my group knew who had a real, useful computer...first digital camera...first iPod, and so on. I was considered to be an “early adopter” and paid big money for new technology.
But I have come to view television, the media, and their extensions of Facebook and other social media as incredibly destructive to humankind.
All things have a duality to them. A hammer may be used to build a beautiful cabinet, or it may be used to bash someone’s brains in.
Cell phones and the Internet have undeniable good aspects to them. But they also have terrible and corrosive aspects as well.
They are not healthy. I think they are outright dangerous for young people in particular, but that ship has sailed. All I can say it, take control of your own life by controlling what gets inside you. You cannot control it for others, but you can control it for yourself.
And by the way, thanks for your service.
You can choose to walk away from anything for any length of time for any reason. You can also choose to control what you let inside you.
We are having conversations on Free Republic. But we choose who we have conversations with, and we choose the tenor of those conversations.
I read your Freep Page, and you sound like you need to adjust your time and expectations in your online and electronic interactions.
Just my opinion, FRiend.
Haahaha!
My thoughts on tour situation is as follows:
So, I watched the documentary on Netflix.
I watched the documentary on Netflix.
Did you know you can not begin the sentence with “so”, and it will still be correct?
Those are my thoughts.
I believe that all of these programs can be locked with a password. To prevent yourself from disengaging the lock you can have the password held by a different member of your family. If each family member has the password of someone else then once you've all locked in your limits they can remain unless there is some sort of emergency need.
The other possibility is to make a list of things you would rather do or ought rather do and make time for them. That will limit the amount of time you have left over for surfing.
Or you can design, build and deploy an EMP weapon, take out the power grid, and need not worry about social media for years to come. ;-)
Family rule at mom's house is no phones at the table. Not a problem for me but my niece starts twitching after a few minutes.
I actually think the 'so' meme is dying out. A few years back it was the "thing to do" to begin sentences with 'so'. It added a sense of modesty to whatever followed. A false sense of modesty.
I noticed it a lot on NPR especially among the newer younger "journalists". They didn't want to sound like know-it-alls so they used the 'so' to ease us into whatever liberal nonsense they were about to spew.
I got sooooo annoyed at the overuse of 'so' that I finally stopped listening to the eNemy at NPR. Now if I want to know what they're up to I just have to look out the window as they march by.
Watched it today as well. Main point was that even if you DO choose not to participate, their ability to subtly manipulate the minds of billions of others will have an impact on you and an impact on society.
The media is the same way. I can choose not to believe fake news. But the riots and the cities that are being burned demonstrate that enough are being swayed and manipulated by it.
Watch one video on police brutality, you end up in an algorithm that serves you up hundreds more until you believe there is nothing but. Enough people in the algorithm turns into a violent riot.
It was a very good documentary. It had a bit of pro climate change and such. But I thought it made some good points.
I left Facebook 5 years ago. Easy quit. Don’t miss it one single bit. Never did Twitter. Love Youtube though. You can avoid poison for the most part there.
Nobody authentically expresses themselves on it anyway. People like it NOT because they can express themselves, but because they can paint themselves a certain way.
Now that has its purposes if, for example, you are promoting something or specifically yourself - or trying to pierce the crowd with your message. But most people think they are using it to express themselves.
But the whole 'look at ME! I'm ME!' is such a fakery.
What it really is ... is ... 'Look at [how I want to control you to see] Me!.'
Human beings, including me, are genetically programmed to be inauthentic. It's how the species makes its way through the world. But the species isn't inauthentic ALL the time. But on social media ... it's pretty much inauthentic all the time. Being inauthentic is necessary at times for navigating the world, but practicing a certain way too much ... and it becomes a bedrock of your character - you become chronically inauthentic.
I'm inauthentic enough as it is :-)
Oh yeah and also anything you ever say can and will be used against you in a world where you can be convicted for something you said 2 days ago that the left only decided was a crime today.
Fat finger issues, along with my lack of proof reading.
