Monday is not only Labor Day in America and Labour Day in Canada but also Independence Day in Brazil, marking the moment when Prince Pedro was persuaded by the country's leaders to declare himself free of Lisbon. To be honest, it always depresses me to see various charmless presidents preside like mob bosses over Independence Day observances, as nothing makes me pine more for the old Empire of Brazil: South America does not do republics well. Be that as it may, there is no doubt that in global pop music Brazil punches above its weight, its contributions to the repertoire being far more significant than Portugal, and indeed more than most other European countries. We don't do enough of that at this shingle, and so at least on September 7th we ought to make recompense, starting with what is by far the best known Brazilian song on the planet:
Tall and tan and young and lovely The Girl From Ipanema goes walking And when she passes Each one she passes Goes 'Ahhhhhh...'
Here's the very first recording - a very sprightly "Garota de Ipanema" by the voice of Bashful in the Portuguese release of Disney's Snow White, Pery Ribeiro:

The most recorded song of all time.
My favorite song and my favorite video. Astrud Rocks!
Thanks for the enjoyable break..... .....But great horns too.
Věra Bílá
Highly acclaimed, toured internationally and was often called the "Ella Fitzgerald of Gypsy music" or the "Queen of Romany"
Until reading Steyn’s piece I didn’t realize it was her first recording and that she wasn’t a professional singer. I thought her unusual delivery was her doing some kind of sophisticated, highly intentional minimalism, but in reality the lack of any “singerisms” is because she didn’t have any. But the result is perfect for the song.
Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto - Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars)
Yea. Thats a Good one also.
And she and one of her daughters posed for Playboy.
Always a bonus.
I also recall she wasn’t really a speaker of English and that is why her accent is so cute (”youn-GHA”).
Damn. I missed that issue.
Either that, or I was so busy reading the articles, that I totally missed the pictures...
I listen to that song at least a couple of times a month. Its simply one of the best songs ever recorded.
She's had some work done, but it's good work!
Given as much time as she spent on tropical beaches, she could have ended up like this:
Swoon indeed!
I always preferred the Homer & Jethro version - The Gal from Possum Holler
Perhaps on on the brigadeiros, but no one says “NO” to pao de queijo...
If you enjoy these, I would recommend a quick and easy mix. You can order these from Amazon. It's Yoki Brand Pao De Queijo. We used to live near "Little Brasil" in Boca Raton but since we moved we've had to make it from this or from scratch. This tastes more authentic to us.
Fortunately for us, we found we can buy the mix locally now.
OK, something new for you to try: Guarana Anartica
This is a really nice, subtle (some brands are much too sweet) flavor and really enjoyable.
Our kids were raised on Guarana and Pao De Queijo.
I am really, really happy you are trying it out - I hope you love it! Cheers!
