Havelock, N.C. Gary Dean, 69, wore a neck gaiter with an American flag printed on it to his job at Food Lion in Havelock, North Carolina. But, Food Lion's uniform policy did not allow for staff members to wear clothing with "writing, insignia or symbols." Dean's manager told him that someone was offended by the American flag image, and he was not allowed to wear the mask anymore at work.
Dean is a veteran of the US Air Force, and decided to resign from his job at the Food Lion, saying that the cooperate [sic] decision went against his personal values.
Food Lion said in a statement that they "have great respect" for the American Flag, but their policy doesn't allow symbols like the American flag.
After a week of the story gaining national attention, Food Lion has changed course. They released an updated statement, and said after listening to employees and customers they decided to change their uniform policy.

I side with Food Lion on this.
By having a uniform policy of 'no writing, insignias, and symbols' they are remaining neutral and apolitical which is what I want from a company, left-wing or right-wing.
As long as it's enforced no American flag also means no pro BLM or pro Antifa masks.
From now on when you go to Food Lion don't complain if you see someone wearing a 'VOTE DEMOCRAT' mask.
Companies should remain neutral and not be political.
Food Lion is part of Ahold Delhaize, a 19B
Europe based concern. In this failed Chynese
bioweapon era their numbers are good.

I find in general their subsidiary stores to be cleaner than
some competitors but much more overpriced.
I would not expect a foreign concern to be sensitive
to traditional US values but they can and should be
squeezed on this matter
Hygiene issuepay attention to skin carewear a clean mask with at minimum a daily changeout. Wash reusable masks to remove biological contaminants as food for microbes, then iron/press to steam sterilize any residual microbes before reuse.
The flag is a symbol of this country. If someone is offended by this countrys flag, then they can shut the f*** up and get the f*** out. Period.
‘someone was offended’. ?
do they like to eat? shop? exist?
so they can spew their hatred.
Why this country faces challenges here daily.
Ingrates. Invaders.
Its a flag, not a rag.
they are based in Belgium i believe.
Our Food lions are absolutely filthy and stink. I won’t buy a can of beans there.
The mask in question is not a flag mask.
Items with the same colors and general theme as a flag, but a different design, are called "bunting". They are acceptable and encouraged as a patriotic display.
The general ignorance of reporters is astonishing.
But there are masks that look like they were made out of a small flag. I’ve seen them on the sidewalks of NYC.
It must have been one of the “special people” - not one of us run-of-the-mill racists.
You are absolutely Correct.
And WHEN is it going to be OVER?
Our Wal Mart has some bras in front near a checkout...cut it in half and it would make two masks..
Might just do it..good for a few laughs..
and there on sale for nine bucks
The general ignorance of reporters is astonishing.

And the photo has been reversed in it’s posting.
To all fellow Freepers getting your panties in a twist over flag masks. I suggest your intentions are good but you/I/we are far down the slippery slope already.
I suggest ignorance is the cause and education is the cure. I will add links below with rules for respecting and displaying the Flag of the United States of America.
Regarding flag masks:
It is NEVER apropriate to use the Flag of the United States of America as clothing.
It is NEVER apropriate to use the US Flag on disposable items.
Regarding the slippery slope we find ourselves on:
It is NOT apropriate to print a black and white flag with a single colored stripe. That makes it an advertisement.
More blatant examples can be found on youtube.
We already have Farmers Business Network taking a US Flag and replacing the Union(stars on blue background) with the words “Farmers First” and adding their web address to the bottom stripe.
We already have the biggest US farm YT channels displaying it to millions of viewers. One ignorant sap who goes by the name of ‘hollywood’ did a whole video where he removed an actual Stars & Bars and replaced it with the FBN abomination. I took him to task and he moved it but he still has it in his shop. I am almost positive FBN requires it to be displayed by the farmers that they sponsor. The 3 big violators I noticed include MN Millenial Farmer, Welker Farms, Fast Ag Montanna.
I suspect the boys are/were ignorant and now have contractual obligations.
Another very common form of lack of respect is the hundreds of thousands of homes that fly an unlighted flag at night.
The rules are sometimes the law. In the District of Columbia there are penalties for not following the rules. I have heard that some states have similar but can not cite an example.
The “rules” I speak of are contained in,
US Code,Title 4, Chapter 1, Section 3. Use of flag for advertising purposes ; mutilation of flag
https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/4/3
US Code,Title 4, Chapter 1, Section 8. Respect for flag
https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/4/8
Item (d) discusses wearing apparel.
Item (i) discusses advertising
Thanks but no thanks, I’ll not support flag masks.
If that makes me a target for freeper abuse so be it.
I always thought it was against proper etiquette to wear the flag as clothing. I wouldn’t use it as a face diaper to get spit and snot on.
For what it’s worth department and that may not be much.

Question:
Is it permissible to wear an item of clothing that looks like the United States flag?
Answer:
Unless an article of clothing is made from an actual United States flag, there is NO
breach of flag etiquette whatsoever. People are simply expressing their patriotism
and love of country by wearing an article of clothing that happens to be red, white,
and blue with stars and stripes. There is nothing illegal about the wearing or use of
these items.

Who was the offended party? Name names!
Food Lion executives and the store manager should get on their stomachs, crawl to kiss the feet of Gary Dean, beg his forgiveness, and ask him to return to work.
Fixed it for you. Apparently a lot of Americans shop at the stores
Those people with the staph infections from their masks must have been wearing “snot rags”, as a doctor who posted here a few weeks ago called them. Those are reusable masks which the wearer wears over and over again without washing them. I wear my cloth masks once, then launder them in hot water. No staph problems.
