“...also known as Old Man Gloom.”
For some reason Biden comes to mind.

Grew up near here. Saw this once as a kid. It creeped me out. Lotta NM traditions creeped me out. The easter time catholic stuff is particularly creepy. People believe that if they "Walk The Santuario" that all their sins are forgiven and its time to party.

There must be something in the air but between Sante Fe and Taos there are probably more frankly insane people per capita than just about anywhere else.

New Mexico settlement and traditions are among the oldest, among non-native populations, in North America, predating Jamestown.

Santa Fe was a great place to grow up in the 1950’s/early ‘60s.

As a cub scout I danced around Zozobra, led by Jacques Cartier, the fire dancer. We were right under old man gloom, then moved back just aways as it was lit. History here: https://burnzozobra.com/all-about-zozobra/

I still grow my own heritage pueblo green chilis and roast them to get 15-20 lbs worth for my yearly supply.

My dad was born in Texico, NM and was a native because he was born in the front bedroom. Uncle Bill was a Texan because he was born in the back bedroom.

Along with Louisiana, New Mexico history and culture offers the sharpest contrast to Anglo and other European settlement.

What was Espanola like in the 50’s-60’s? Was it as much of a timewarp kind of town as it has been during all my time there (70’s-80’s)?

Everything went south in the 70’s and all to hell in the 80’s. I went to college, out of state, in 1970. The word chicano was never used. If you were Spanish, you would be called Spanish-American. Anything else and they were insulted. By 1974, chicano was everywhere. New Mexicans began to lose their tripartite - Hispanic/Anglo/Indian - identification and culture due to the new “Latino” and mexican influences. You also had the hippies, the new yorkers and californicators invade.

My Uncle Bill lived in Espanola. Nice, normal Hispanic town growing up. Though in northern NM they could be a little rough.

Growing up I fished every native trout stream in northern NM. Went everywhere. No problems. My best friends were Hispanic and Indian. I am Anglo. My best teacher, and godfather to my first son, was a Hispanic scholar with a research center in Truchas.

Basically post WWII NM up until to 70’s was a whole different place, politically/ culturally than after. It was a different world.

On a side note, my great grandfather, who lived near Las Vegas, NM., would lend his hunting hounds to Teddy Roosevelt during the Rough Rider reunions there.

A very good film of what I am talking about is Red Sky in the Morning with
Richard Thomas (John boy) if you can find it.

Another good movie is Milagro Beanfield War, directed by Robert Redfield. It was filmed in Truchas. Used to see Redfield zooming up there in his sports car. You could walk the movie set when they wern’t filming. From ten feet away you would swear they put up adobe walls for the houses. It was all Styrofoam block, sprayed brown.

It is very hard for traditional “yankees” to understand authentic New Mexican culture and cuisine. It is just so different. Unfortunately that’s what attracted the newcomers from Ca. Etc who have destroyed what they were attracted to.

My mom was from NJ. She met my dad in Santa Fe, who was recovering as a Bataan Death March 4 year POW survivor. She hated it at first. Adapted, and became thoroughly New Mexican. Was a Great New Mexican cook. When my wife makes chicken chili cheese enchiladas with her recipe, I just take a bite, close my eyes, and I am home.
