The Drug Testing Advisory Board (DTAB) within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has submitted a hair testing proposal to the Federal Register for publication, the agency confirmed at a September 1 meeting.
Hair testing is believed to have a much longer detection period up to 90 days for certain narcotics, versus 2 to 3 days for urine tests and hair tests are cheaper to administer.
OOIDA ( Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association) also cites inconsistencies in the results for hair testing based on race: According to the American Civil Liberties Union, dark hair is more likely to test positive for a drug, and, additionally, African-Americans are more likely to test positive than Caucasians.

“and, additionally, African-Americans are more likely to test positive than Caucasians.”
Hmmm, I wonder why?
Do not know what became of that defendant. If I remember correctly (and this was 20 or so years ago) the court denied its request for a hair sample.
THX-1138 is our future.
The Tesla thread was yesterday.

Great, just great.
Not particularly safety minded are you? Until we have solid self-driving trucks, there's no reason not to test the drivers.
Damned drug warriors. I see nothing in my copy of the Constitution that gives any government (or other) entity any say over what goes into my body.
**************************************************
True dat. Its also true that theres nothing in the Constitution requiring them to hire those who refuse.
Yeah, I’ve worked with it also. The principal scientist was using poly tubing for venting a 1 liter vessel that was 650psi. He was using poly tubing on several systems for the inlet as well, but they were 100 psi or less, but still...
If Joe Biden sniffs the hair, does it render the hair sample as contaminated? 😁🤗
Pubes? Best body wax, eh?
Among the many modern marvels that I had at work, my favorite was the laser hydrogen detection system.
A laser with a series of mirrors and a sensor would detect a frequency shift from hydrogen floating in the lab air.
And they let me play with it!
Will the people taking the hair sample have completed 1500 hours of training in a cosmetology school and be licensed?
“there’s no reason not to test the drivers.”
Do we also test them for residual alcohol? I’ve had some nasty hangovers in my life ... while a hangover wouldn’t necessarily impair one’s driving, the fatigue caused by a hangover could be a problem for truck drivers if they aren’t well rested.
What about cough medicine? Test for that too?
How do we catch people that huff model glue?
What about people that might OD energy drinks while driving? Yeah, its rare, but it can happen and it seems like everyone is so concerned about the planet being 99.99999999999999999999999999999999999999999% safe.
I’m sorry, but all of this drug testing is frigging ridiculous.
I am 100% for any kind of punishment when a vehicle or heavy equipment operator is found to be under the influence of a drug. Using these tests as a screen for employment is crazy though. It’s a complete waste of money. Managers could be trained to spot people inebriated on the job for a hell of a lot less money than whats blown on drug tests. If a person is an addict and they’re terrible at their job, they get fired.
For the record, I tend to not use anything. I rarely drink these days. I just find drug testing to be a complete waste of time for people subjected to that crap.
(I’m not attacking you to be clear ... just offering up a different opinion :-) ).
I know a number of teachers at private high schools and they have been having random hair tests for at least five years. And the kids get tested, too.
You don’t want to work for those companies anyway.
Look for a local mom n pop company that gets you home every night to sleep in your own bed and crap in your own toilet.
It beats walking 200 yards through the rain at a truck stop (after being woken up by the reefer next to you kicking on and off all night, or worse, a livestock trailer full of stomping, mooing cows,) to share a restroom with 100 other guys, and when you walk in, there’s a Somalian dude washing his junk in the restroom sink with no humility or regard for anyone else.
And the next day, you get to drive 450 miles to some damn place outside Topeka you’ve never seen before, miss the only turn to get into their lot, find your way 20 miles around to get back there, and then get bitched out by your dispatcher because you were ten minutes late for your appointment. Then you may be able to spend the night in their parking lot with only a porta-john for facilities and no place to buy even a bag of peanuts.
Home every night is where it’s at. Ignore the “experience required” claims in the ads. Local companies need drivers. If you look upstanding, intelligent, and like you have your sheet together you’re already halfway hired. Pass their driving test on interview day and you’ll have a job.
Dopers demand their right to violate the rights of others.
Either everyone is tested, or no one is tested.
Ummmm - how many dark-haired heads compared to fair-haired heads are there in the world?
Mandatory testing for blow outs in closed salons will be next.
Rather work in the oil path instead. Lots of Fracking going near Greeley, Colorado anyways.
” how many dark-haired heads compared to fair-haired heads are there in the world?”
What a fun question!
A quick search ...
What are the hair color percentages of the world?
Black/dark brown hair makes up 75-84% of the worlds population. 11% of the population is naturally brunette, 3% has blonde hair, and 2% has natural red hair.
