NewsNation is an American news program that will broadcast on WGN America beginning September 1, 2020. The three-hour-long, nightly news program will offer non-partisan coverage, primarily utilizing the journalistic resources of Nexstar Media Group's 110 television news operations (among its 197 owned-and/or-operated stations nationwide).[1] The neutral broadcast is designed to compete with mainly opinion-based news programs shown on CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News Channel during the 8:00 to 11:00 p.m. Eastern Time timeslot.

The genesis of the project was in October 2019, when Nexstar management commissioned viewer research that showed that people were dissatisfied with opinion-based programming on the cable news channels.[2] CNN, which had previously shown straight news programming during the evening, moved into personality-based programming under the leadership of Jeff Zucker,[3] while MSNBC and Fox News have shown personality-based evening programming since the cancellation of The News with Brian Williams and the Fox Report. Originally codenamed Project Neutral, on January 15, 2020, Nexstar announced the program, a few months after the closing of an acquisition with Tribune Media. The program will replace acquired entertainment programming and movies that occupied the prime time hours, and will be the first national news effort to use WGN America as a platform since it carried the similarly formatted 1980–90 syndicated program Independent Network News under former parent Tribune's ownership (as the superstation feed of WGN-TV).[4][5] Because NewsNation replaces syndicated programming scheduled to expire, the cost is neutral to Nexstar.[6]

Nexstar has hired "rhetoricians" to monitor the language used to describe events for neutrality

We shall see
