From the scanty reports of the movement of affairs in the interior of China, furnished by French and English journals, it is satisfactory to turn to the letter of our correspondent at Shanghai, given elsewhere in the present issue of the TIMES. Such accounts as we have hitherto had have told us in general terms that the rebellion had recently assumed new vigor; that the opposition of the Imperial troops had been fruitless; and that the movement was steadily northward, from the ancient, toward the actual capital of the Empire. From our own informant we now learn that the movement, which had ceased its advance in 1854, has recently reentered upon a career of triumph, which, independently of outward enmity, is likely to bring to a close the history of the reigning Tartar family. In 1854, after two years of steady progress, which placed in the possession of the insurgents the great valley of the Yang-tze-Kiang, embracing Nanking, the former metropolis of China, and the outlets of the imperial canal, connecting the great river with Peking, the rebellion appeared to have been checked, and the chances leaned in favor of an eventual preponderance of the Imperialists. These six years of pause have, however, served only to recruit the rebellion and weaken the Government at Peking, and in the recent resumption of hostilities the irresistible power of the revolt is clearly discernible. The rebellion actually holds possession of the populous heart of the Empire.

I don't think so. That is still about 40 years off.

I normally try to avert my eyes from foreign affairs stories in the Times. I figure I will have my hands full with domestic matters in a few months. Sometimes I get things like the Chinese rebellion editorial because they print out with the adjacent piece I really want to post and I don't want to waste the print job.

Back then an event on the other side of the world would be news weeks or months after it happened. Now it can go worldwide in 10-15 minutes and be old news by tomorrow.

It’s the Taiping Rebellion, much bloodier than the Boxer’s. 20-30 million is estimated to have been killed.
