We publish this morning a speech which will be read with interest by that very large class of reflecting men, who regard the public welfare as of more consequence than any mere party victory, and who cannot see clearly the path of duty in the present complications of political affairs. It was made by Hon. R. W. THOMPSON, of Indiana, a few days since, and has been specially reported for the TIMES. Mr. THOMPSON is one of the ablest and most highly esteemed politicians of the West. He was an old Clay Whig, and has more recently acted with the Union Conservatives. He was an active member of the Baltimore Union Convention, and assented to the nomination of BELL and EVERETT, with full confidence in their ability, and in the hope that they might be elected. The course of political events, however, and especially the treachery of some in New-York who were pledged to support them, has convinced him that their election by the people is hopeless; and he doubts the wisdom, therefore, of adhering to the ticket which they represent. He denounces, in the strongest terms, the attempt of Union men in this State to fuse with either wing of the Democratic Party, as not only a surrender of principle but as menacing the country with the gravest and most serious calamities. Its only effect on the pending contest, if it has any, will be to defeat a popular choice and throw the election into Congress. Mr. THOMPSON gives some very cogent reasons for deprecating such a result as that in any case; and in this instance he deems it especially objectionable, because it would render highly probable the election of LANE to be the acting President for the next four years.

Excited to have the legendary Laz in the forum. Welcome aboard.
Mr. Thompson of Indiana is a self-described conservative and will vote for Lincoln to spare the nation from more mis-rule by Democrats who have divided the country. An eminently sensible man.
