Best Personal Defense Pistol for Woman
Self | August 24, 2020 | Self

Posted on 08/24/2020 7:32:46 PM PDT by ProtectOurFreedom

My sister just turned 67 and wants to purchase a pistol for self-defense.

I do not think she has ever fired a weapon before in her life. She is sufficiently concerned about the crap going on that she wants to be able to defend herself. She works in downtown Baltimore and commutes from her home in suburban Maryland between Baltimore, Wash DC, and Annapolis.

What do the FR firearms experts recommend for the pistol, ammunition, and training? How do you evaluate trainers and their training programs? What do you look for?

Why not get yourself a Ruger LCR .22LR? That way it’s not her gun. And then let her “borrow” it. I’ve known several people who went to the .22 as they got older, and it’s an excellent self-defense choice for many people.

And possibly putting it in the hands of a criminal is where it goes from there....

“Why not get yourself a Ruger LCR .22LR?”

My thoughts exactly. Probably easier to get her to the range then.

I know a woman that bought an LCP in .380. She hated it. It hurt to practice with it.

Satire and reality have been on a collision course for a while, now.

All well and good, unless/until the purse is snatched. If it stops there, and the perp runs away, that’s good for the carrier. But the best case scenario is that you’ve armed a purse snatcher, who probably has other criminal proclivities.

If she is in California, like ProtectOurFreedom, (original poster), it will be nearly impossible to get a carry permit.

Just like with hunting when you fire under stressfire conditions you will never notice the additional recoil and after the first shot without hearing protection the noise is also moot all you will hear is the ringing regardless if you are shooting 38 or 357s.

That is an interesting observation; I had not thought of that before. I like that idea.

For low recoil, a 4” instead of a 2” barrel works wonders.

Having a gun will not protect someone not prepared to kill and live with the results. If she’s just now looking for a gun it’s unlikely she was ever in the military or a LEO so it not the cure all she thinks it is.

Exactly right. I think she perceives two potential problems:
1) mobs in Baltimore on her way to or from work and
2) mobs moving into their nice suburban tract.

I agree that a gun is not necessarily the solution to either problem. You might shoot one of the mob trying to drag you from your car, but they would be so hopped-up at losing one of their own they would probably beat you to death. You are probably better off trying to drive out of the mob situation.

And, for #2, the mobs won't always back off like they did for the McCloskeys in St. Louis. Normally, when you kill the leaders, the rest of the mob will back off, but I'm not sure that will work for these BLM mobs. Drop a couple of them in the front and the rest will attack you like a pile of zombies.

Maybe a .22 or .25 might be better for her.

“All well and good, unless/until the purse is snatched.”

Great point but I didn’t say keep it in your purse. A holster or pocket works well for that weapon.

Bella Twin, the .22 Used to Take the 1953 World Record Grizzly, and More, by Dean Weingarten, Ammoland Inc., June 7, 2017. Bella Twin was a 63 year old Cree woman who had a reputation for being a deadly shot. She shot the world record grizzly in 1953.

Frankly, I don’t think she has it in her to pull the trigger. More the type to torture one man for 40 years than kill a stranger, outright. As rarely as she leaves the house, she probably has little to fear.
