Editorials: The Political Coalition, The Mexican Imbroglio, South Carolina and Disunion; Republican Convention at Syracuse (8/24/1860)

It seems to be universally conceded that a larger number of the people of this State are in favor of the Republican than of any other ticket. Each of the three other parties confesses its inability to carry the State. But they all hope that by uniting their forces they may defeat their common foe. The great point aimed at now, therefore, by the friends of BELL, DOUGLAS and BRECKINRIDGE, is to combine their votes so as to defeat LINCOLN. The work has been partly accomplished. The Douglas Democrats have put up an electoral ticket of which ten places, out of 33, are given to the friends of BELL; -- and it is confidently believed that before the election the Breckinridge party will accept a similar position on the same ticket. This is a most extraordinary spectacle, -- one never before witnessed, we believe, in the history of the country. Coalitions are bad enough in any case. Even when political leaders, who have been hostile to each other, unite to advance some principle or some policy which they hold in common, they are quite apt to disgust and repel the mass of their followers. The people at large detest everything that looks like political trading. It always smacks of corruption. It shocks their ideas of consistency, and of steady adhesion to a regular course of political action. But in this case the attempted coalition is in the grossest and most flagrant violation of every pretence of political decency. Here are three parties who have nothing whatever in common, but their malignant hatred of a fourth. They have always differed, radically and widely, upon nearly every political question that has engaged public attention for the last few years.
