Husband is left paralyzed after being hit by stray bullet when he insisted on walking to the store with his new wife to hold her umbrella in gentrified Brooklyn as gun violence in NYC spirals out of control

An innocent bystander who was shot in broad daylight in Brooklyn on Wednesday will likely never walk again after a bullet struck his spine while he walked with his wife to buy toothpaste from a nearby store.

The tragic shooting is one of several incidents of gun violence in New York City, where homicides surged by 29 per cent to 244 from January 1 to August 2 from the same period last year.

The five boroughs have also seen an 84.6 per cent rise in shooting victims to 1,017 during those dates compared with the same period in 2019, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Sam Metcalfe, 33, survived the shooting while an 18-year-old man, Malcolm Amede, died near the intersection of Ocean and Woodruff avenues in Flatbush - just south of Prospect Park.

Amede, a suspected gang member, was believed to be the shooter’s intended target.

A GoFundMe account started to help Metcalfe and his wife, Sabrina, described how the tragic events unfolded.

‘On Wednesday, August 19, 2020, Sabrina and her husband Sam left their Brooklyn apartment to go to the store and get some toothpaste,’ the organizer of the crowdfunding effort, Krysta Zagorski, wrote.

‘She told him he didn’t need to come but he wanted to hold the umbrella for her because it was raining and the umbrella was broken.

‘While crossing an intersection less than five minutes from their building, shots rang out and Sam was hit.

‘The intended victim (not Sam) was also shot multiple times and died as a result.’

Zagorski continued: ‘Almost immediately, Sam couldn’t feel his legs. We now know that the bullet hit his kidney and stopped when it hit his spine.

‘They removed his kidney but his condition is too fragile to attempt to remove the bullet just yet.

Truly tragic. They have so much of their lives ahead of them. Even though the husband can’t walk he still stands tall in my book.

It was a mostly peaceful shooting. Between rounds, it was serenely quiet.

I think NYC is going to produce a LOT more votes for the Republican candidate in this Presidential election, than usual.

(I doubt it will be enough steer NY State as a whole for Trump, but I think it will be significant compared to past numbers.)

What a difference a year makes. Just a year ago, I was discussing how Brooklyn was rapidly becoming the new Manhattan.

Good catch. The UK papers are still calling it like they see it. On the other hand...I’ve read that many American news have stopped describing the perpetrators, and have stopped showing their pictures once they are arrested.

Maybe that will work. After all, it works for ostriches.

Yes, but Brooklyn is so “woke,” has such a great, diverse culture, and has such great restaurants! /s

So, so glad I left NYC many years ago. Have -1 desire to revisit.

The tragic shooting is one of several incidents of gun violence...

Tired of that dishonest line. It's people violence. Disproportionally, black people violence.

That’s a hell of a price to pay for the privilege of living in the WORLD’S GREATEST CITY (just ask them) with the WORLD’S GREATEST POLICE DEPARTMENT with all the vibrancy, diversity, (and formerly) museums, broadway, fine dining etc.

I wonder who they voted for? This will end when people stop voting for the DNC and the others who don’t bother to vote get off of their ass. This man will not get up again and the family will forever be in anguish.Multiply this by millions and we see the rot of liberalism envelopes America.

Far from Greenpoint. Just south of Prospect Park. I believe it’s a tough neighborhood.

If he’s a lib, I doubt this will change his vote. He will blame the gun and probably try to become the next Jim Brady.

Kind of stretch, I’d say.

All of the very talented artists from Manhattan from around the Village, all migrated to Brooklyn where they started to make the scene bringing Manhattan art and music culture to the streets there.

They migrated because Manhattan was gentrifying and becoming too expensive for artists to afford to live.

Rudy’s fault.

An entire art colony sprung up in Brooklyn.

Within a year as you said, it’s become a hell.

The Mayor and Fredo’s brother drove out bunches of billionaires, one of who drives them crazy.

They don’t have guns in NY. It must have been a stray from Pennsylvania.
