Reds announcer Thom Brennaman uses homophobic slur, exits game

The longtime play-by-play man for the Cincinnati Reds exited the broadcast booth Wednesday and begged for forgiveness after video showed him using a homophobic slur on a hot mic earlier in the day.

“One of the f-g capitals of the world,” Thom Brennaman said on the Fox Sports Ohio TV broadcast during the first game of a scheduled doubleheader between the Reds and Royals in Kansas City.

A few seconds passed before Brennaman, seemingly unaware his comment was made on-air, recited a promo for the network’s pregame show.

The 56-year-old later exited the second game after videos of the incident made the rounds on social media, and issued an apology while looking directly into the camera for parts of it.

Pete Rose bets on baseball...Cincinnati doesn’t care.

Thom Brennaman uses a slur...get out the pitchforks!

Amazing, though. I went to the twitter thread on this and I swear every flaming lefty in sports media had already demanded he be fired. Easy to tell who the cancel culture in sports are.

It’s unclear from the audio of he was referring to Kansas City of some other location.

Thirty years when Rose get on baseball, using the term fag wouldn’t have been a big deal, either.

We’ve got to stop ruining people’s lives over things like this.

Stephen Sondheim, in his musical Company, wrote a song called "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" (fun song), which included the lyrics:

I could understand a person
If it's not a person's bag
(Too dood de oo doo)
I could understand a person
If a person was a f-g

They got it rewritten for the revival.

In Washington, there was a sportscaster named Ken Beatrice, for many years at WMAL, then at WTEM. One night, he was talking to his producer and thought they had already gone to break.

Not realizing the mic was still live, he said, “That caller was a f——ng moron.” He got suspended for a week.

So is KC a f-g city or not? Or is its reputation based solely on a line from “Blazing Saddles”?

Thom should say it was a proper term, because he’s heard it said so often in pop culture.

These guys should stop surrendering to their tyranny of language usage.

A forbidden word. Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits in the original version of Money for Nothing (their biggest hit) uses the word “faggot” multiple times in one stanza. The lyrics are meant to satirize the culture he was depicting in the song. Nevertheless, the most recent version deletes that stanza:

“See the little faggot with the earring and the make-up
Yeah buddy that’s his own hair
That little faggot got his own jet airplane
That little faggot he’s millionaire”

Why call it homophobic? It’s dirty. It’s obscene. It doesn’t belong in public expression.

Assuming it’s the word that rhymes with duck, why is that homophobic in the first place?

When you’re done, you’re done. Take it like a man. Do not appologize, no one believes you anyway. Don’t be remembered as a pussy. Use that last minute on the air to double down on what you originally said. More people will respect you.

He should have stuck to baseball. No one cares about his personal opinions.

Baseball announcers live or die by their ability to fill-in LOOOOOOOOONG gaps in the action by talking about other things. Particularly on radio. No one who sticks strictly to baseball would survive in that job for very long.

Years ago we had a local TV sportscaster in Pittsburgh who got fired for opening a report on the Pirates with “What a sh*tty way to lose a game!”

There is some audio out there on the web of Bob Uecker trying to call a game at PNC Park while the Furry Convention was going on in Pittsburgh. Hearing Uke trying to describe the characters wandering around his hotel was classic!

One of my favorite quick descriptions of a game was a New York Nets game described by former MLB pitcher Jim Bouton. The Nets were still in the ABA, and they had signed Rick Barry from the NBA Warriors.

Bouton’s description: “The Nets didn’t play tonight. Rick Barry scored 47 points.”
