I say power off but I'm pretty sure that the tv is already off, (except for the sound) because the remote wont change the channel and the back button wont work!
One time, instead of going black, the screen turned green?
(Don't remember if it kept the sound on that time)
I have a Verizon QIP 7100 P2 cable box.
I have run an hdmi cable from the box to the 2.1 hdmi port on the tv.
As I said, this is a Brand New smart tv and it is starting to display the same problem that my 14 year old Vizio tv had!
(That one went totally dark too but kept the sound!)
Nothing would bring the picture back though, not even powering off and on. (So I replaced it with this one) 8-(
I find it difficult to believe that this "less than a week old tv" would be going out!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
google it i have done a few tons of tutorials
Just me.
I don’t tolerate out of box probs and return stuff immediately
Couple of questions for you
- are you useing the same HDMI cable you used for the old set? (If yes, that might be the problem).
- is it the same Verizon box?
- have you tried using something other than HDMI to connect? Coax, maybe, or the video and sound out jacks?
Take it back to wherever you purchased it from. They’ll give you another one.
Try a new hdmi cable.
Some TVs go black when they lose signal and receive static. Instead of static, they go blue or black, depending on the make/model of TV.
You could also have a failing circuit board component (usually a capacitor) or the backlight itself inside the TV that is getting too hot, thus partially shutting down and causing the screen to go black. Power cycling the TV can temporarily resolve the issue until the heat build up reoccurs through regular use.
If TV signal is not the culprit, I would do one or all of the following:
Backlight issue with a new TV?!? Not good. Use a flashlight when the screen is “black” and if you can see a “ghost picture” then it is the backlight going in and out.
Can you get a 9year old to check it out?
Return it and get a Samsung equivalent TV........Had a couple of Vizio TV/s that I replaced with Samsungs........
The most obvious and important question: did you save the store receipt? My primary computer monitor is a 32” Visio that has worked great for three years, never an issue unless I bump the button on my KVM switch and my Linux tower is off for some reason. But my good luck doesn’t rub off over the Internet. You may well have gotten a lemon. Many a monitor have I unboxed that never made it to a desktop because it was a factory stinker. Don’t assume that it’s just you. In fact, just blame the monitor and go get a good one. LOL
Take it back, get a Samsung smart TV for a few dollars more (good movie).
Though this actually may be an issue with your cable provider. I often have outages like that, but they don’t last long - screen comes back after 5-10 seconds. If it goes to black and stays black, it’s probably the HDMI cable - try a different HDMI slot or, worst case, cable. Or, of course, the TV settings.
Vizio TVs are racists!
Take it back and get a Samsung.

Nice to meet you, Just This Week. Odd name. Is "This" a common middle name?
There will still be sound but no picture!
Sometimes it happens when changing the channel!
Good use of exclamation points! Can't help you otherwise.
Return this new pos and demand a ChiCom TV made in Wuhan.
Our Vizio did the same exact thing. It was the power supply box. 6-7 months out of warranty.
$325 to fix. That was 10 year ago still going strong.
Call Vizio tech support. Save yourself the aggravation of unsuccessful troubleshooting on your own. If they can’t help you, return it.
Is there a reason why you didn’t do this already?
Call their customer service group, they have solved my problems. Friendly and helpful. Call today!
I have a GUESS, it may be a timeout setting to blank the screen after ‘x’ time. Back a bit, there was a ‘burn-in’ problem that was well known with the CRT displays and then with the plasma types. Sometimes these controls remain in the software settings even though modern displays don’t have much problems in this area.
I echo the suggestion to call Vizio Customer Service, they are your first level of help before the return department.
