I think I understand your feelings about this book. I used to have some problems with it, myself. When I read it in grad school, Madame Bovary just seemed like a fool. She marries the wrong man; makes one foolish mistake after another; but when I read it this time, I just fell in love with her. She's trapped! She has a choice: she can either accept a life of misery or she can struggle against it. And she chooses to struggle.

I disagree. Devotion is a trait you pick or become.. it isn’t something natural like being born with blue eyes or brown hair. I say it is a choice for both sexes. My husband has stayed true to me and honored his vows (when I know he has probably been offered otherwise) and I have done the same ( and yes.. women get offers as well). The answer for it all is this.. why did you marry and do you want to stay married? (’you” being everyone not you in particular).

Grandma lived on a farm,grew enormous gardens,canned food for winter,helped with the farm animals,took in washing,attended church,tried her best to civilize 12 kids,who all grew to adulthood and lived decent middle class lives,most of which also had many kids.Her female children,my aunts were also very straightforward about sexuality.All my aunts and grandma home cooked enormous meals and taught me all their recipes.You never left home with an empty tummy and carried home enough leftovers to feed you for a week.

My family is chock full of what might be considered high-functioning beta males. Great and devoted husbands and fathers who leqd good and satisfying lives. They are not ceaven for success or widespread female adulation. I have just seen enough of it play out over genrations to think that there is an inherited component. I believe nature, nurture, and yes, free will have a part in most character traits and behaviors. I have seen nothing to convince me that mating fidelity is any different.
