Some Salt Lake protesters decry charges as too harsh, a conflict of interest

SALT LAKE CITY - A retired judge has been asked by the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office to prosecute the criminal cases of nine people accused of vandalizing the district attorney’s building during recent protests.

But the unusual move is already raising eyebrows and has become the latest chapter in an already controversial situation.

District Attorney Sim Gill announced this week that former 3rd District Judge Dane Nolan, who retired in 2017, will serve as “conflict counsel” for the vandalism cases. That means Nolan will handle the cases of those accused of breaking windows and spreading gallons of red paint around the district attorney’s office building following the ruling that the shooting death of a Salt Lake man by police was legally justified.

**SNIP**

Ever since the riot in downtown Salt Lake City on May 30, the district attorney’s office has been charging people with criminal mischief, a first-degree felony, and rioting, a third-degree felony, for their roles in vandalizing a Salt Lake police patrol car, vandalism at the state Capitol, and vandalism at a TRAX station, the Matheson Courthouse as well as other downtown businesses. Many of those charged with spray-painting the Capitol were charged with second-degree felonies.

On Aug. 5, four people were charged in connection to the vandalism of Gill’s building, bringing the total at that time to eight. A total of nine people have ultimately been linked as co-defendants as of Friday in connection with the vandalism and the clash with police after officers in riot gear moved in to break up the protest, according to court records.

She is telling the truth, but no one wants to hear what she says, Until they have their backs against the wall looking down the rifle barrels. Then it will be, :We did not know.”

Well, maybe next time they will throw their leftist hissy fits in a more riot friendly jurisdiction like Minneapolis, Seattle or Portland.

Exactly. There is no co-existence with these communists. They’ve crossed the rubicon and the time is drawing closer.
They only understand one thing and they got it coming to them....BIG TIME.

Man that face should come with a warning sign.

that would have been a very good way to avoid any charges. Not destroy things. It’s worked for me.

There were gangsters who hunh around the pizzeria I worked at when I was young. And a few others.

One of the guys always looked into the longest possible sentence he could get for a crime he committed. He said it was always prudent to assume you can get the worst sentence when deciding if the crime was worth it.

What was Prudent was to not commit crime at all :-) but he had an interesting take on things.

Interesting to see them fob this off on a retired judge. Apparently, prosecuting criminal rioters is a bad move for some ambitious careerists in SLC.

Have you seen the young punks in Provo, Utah stopping traffic and shooting at drivers? A driver was shot then took off only to drive by another shooter who was standing in the middle of the road shooting at the car.

The article said that he was in “stable” condition in the hospital. What ever that means.

These SOBs have to eat and sleep somewhere.
They need to be hunted down like the animals they are.

From the article: McNeil, 28, is one of the 'protesters' (I prefer terrorists) that was a leader in this offense.

Too bad sweetie, you did the crime, now do the time. Hopefully you'll stay scared and not do something like this again.

Reminds me of when the county prosecutor in Cincinnati's car was stolen. At a press conference he was asked if the defendants would be treated more harshly and he said that they would be treated exactly the same as anyone else stealing the prosecutors car. :-)

McNeil tweeted, “I am pretty sad and also pretty scared!!

Don't worry, I am sure you will find a Nice Man in Prison to take care of you.

Seventy years ago she would have been part of the Hitler youth. Look at that face. It just goes to show there isn’t much different between far right and far left.

“...Many of them looked like teenagers....”
Maybe they need a good, old-fashion azz whipping that their parents never gave em growing up? Perhaps they need to learn: “Don’t do the crime, if you can do the time..”
Shooting at people should get them a good, long prison sentence while cell-mated up with “Big Bubba” and his BBF.

It just goes to show there isn’t much different between far right and far left.

Hitler was correctly considered a man of the left until he attacked the Soviet Union.

He was pretty mainstream left, right there with Mussolini. He was simply Nationalist left vs. Internationalist left.

Calling Fascist "far right" has been one of the biggest lies since WWII.

This leftist mental disorder is spreading. You would never expect it in a place like Utah. Tell everybody in your family and everybody you know to vote for Trump.
