Would that more people remembered Booker T. Washington today. He was a great man.

He was publicly maligned by the Communist W.E.B. Du Bois, which is why he’s less well-known today.

What a hopeful message he had.

I used one of his quotes in a post yesterday, one that should be taught in our schools... There is another class of coloured people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs. ― Booker T. Washington

Obama said Booker didn’t build that. We all built it.

He was so far ahead of his time, actually timeless in his wisdom, much of it a reflection of Christian values. Early in launching my career in the 70s as one of the first women hired for a mans job (jobs that are now held by women in equal numbers to men), I knew there would be many hurdles of discrimination and antipathy ahead. One weekend I read Booker T. Washingtons biography cover to cover. It was so inspiring and empowering to read of his tireless dedication in the face of much worse prejudice than I would undergo. Ive thought of his words so often in these nearly 60 years since. I hope to meet him on the other side to say thank you.
