Rumor has it that Apple (APPL) AAPL -3% will release its cheapest ever top-tier phone this fall.
Influential tech magazine Toms Guide recently posted a leak claiming iPhone 12 will retail starting at $549. Thats almost half of what Apple charged for iPhone X a few years ago.
This raises the question: Why is the most premium tech product maker all of a sudden selling itself short? Ill show in a moment, Apples business is entering a new era where iPhone profits wont matter anymore.
Low price tags might seem like a desperate move to fend off competition. But like a chess master plotting several moves ahead, Apple is using cheap phones to seize what Apples CEO, Tim Cook, calls the mother of all opportunities.
iPhone is hands-down the most successful product in history. Since its introduction, Apple sold more than a trillion dollars worth of iPhones. And for years, iPhone generated more than half of Apples total sales.
But iPhone was more than Apples biggest money maker. It was Apples gateway into the pockets of over a billion people.
Take a look at this chart. It shows the growth of Apples active devices all across the world:
Thanks to iPhone, Apple now has 1.5 billion active devicesphones, watches, etc. used by over a billion people from all across the world. The company added a whopping half billion devices during the last few years alone.
Think about it, nearly one in seven people now carry around an Apple device every day.
Today, those 1.5 billion active devices are the single most important driver of Apples business.
Apple makes tons of money outside an Apple store
It does so through a myriad of services connected to Apple devices.

I think Ray Parker Jr. ripped you off.
I believe that was “I Want A New Drug”, not “Ghostbusters”.
One of the wealthiest companies is the world also complains American IT workers make to much and offshores the production of most of their products to the 3rd world and gets to import them back into the USA duty free.. What BS.
Black market it is then. You may not have noticed but there seems to be a coin shortage, so many stores require exact change of credit/debit card only. It is coming whether we like it or not. Christians have long awaited the "neither being able to buy or sell" part of Bible Prophesy to come about, up until this current generation it probably was not possible to institute but now computers make it possible.
Another thing that hurries this along is the more rapid self checkout in most stores and I read that Walmart will be switching to all self checkout soon.
That's nice. Ever try to watch a video on a watch? LOL!
My wife got several earbuds, not Apple, but look and work exactly as Apple product, $40.00 on Amazon.
Wow, they just dropped the price to $16.99
Oooh, what a good product idea!
Yup. For a while, I had an MP3 music player, and had an FM transmitter hooked up to the headphone jack. Worked great. However, when on trips, you sometimes had to search for dead air and retune to that channel if a local station was a flamethrower.
Agree with the comment, but I really don't understand the trend towards thinness. Personally, I'd rather have a bigger battery. Also prefer wired headphones, so I don't have yet another device I have to charge.
Speaking of thickness issues, I'd really love to see a ipad-type device with a 9" screen that was about as thick as your average paperback. It would allow you to have a battery long enough to let you read 24x7 for a week.
I have one Apple stick certificate, framed, as a long ago anniversary gift from the wife. It’s been a long time since I saw a dividend check. Usually about 5 bucks or so.
You may also be able to get all of the missed dividends as well. You could try Apple shareholder services.
“AAPL has learned well the lessons of MSFT.
When computers were young, Microsoft stole the lions share of the market by having cheap computers that became ubiquitous.
Well the new computer is a smart phone. And Apple is now the one that is ubiquitous. A cheap enough handset and they will take most of the market.”
Guess who also learned that? Huawei. And they stole it.
I’ll have to look at it.
It’s in a nice frame with the date I think engraved.
Mid 00s vintage maybe.
She got it as anniversary gift for the year that fruit was appropriate.
Up until last year, I got the 5 buck check every so often. I have forgotten about it until this post.
So...an iBook? LOL! Kidding aside, I remember seeing a disassembly video of an Apple laptop, don't remember the flavor. The interesting thing to me was that the motherboard, memory, SSD, all occupied the space of a large cell phone, the rest of the space under the keyboard was battery.
The first split was in June ‘87, the second in June of ‘00, and the third in Feb.’05. The 7:1 split was in ‘14. HTH.
Yup! pretty much, though for my ebook, I really prefer it to not be an iThing, since they don't have SD card slots. I like my iPhone, mainly because I pretty much use it mostly for a phone. My ebook has all my media (audio and books) on it. I just wish the things had a more substantial battery.
I had a Samsung phone and tablet that both had micro-sd card slots. Both devices would fail to recognize the card unless I formatted it. Hopefully things have changed and the card readers in today’s devices are more reliable.
Have you thought of carrying a power bank to use with your current reader?
Two reasons why. A lot of people have lost their jobs due to the Covid 19 lock down. Furthermore, they are most likely receiving taxpayer money to lower prices. Sort of like Amazon with shipping.
I've owned Apple products since 2003 and they all work flawlessly. I still have an iPod from that era on its original battery. I use it to supply music to my garage.
Only issues I've ever had with Apple product was self-inflicted (such as spilling wine on my MacBook keyboard) and even then, Apple fixed it with no questions asked.
You now have a scientific calculator as a simple app on your iPhone. Along with the compass app, the maps, and the music, that along justifies the price. And I'm just scratching the surface of what a modern iPhone can do.
BTW, it also makes phone calls. If you want to stay old school.
Really? Why not bring back the rotary phone while you are at it?
Eliminating the headphone jack was one of the better things Apple has done. Those wired headphones really cramped my style, always getting snagged on something and otherwise getting in the way. Wireless earbuds is the way to go. You will never look back.
We all get old and that sucks.
