Big Ten presidents reportedly meeting tonight as ‘vast majority’ favor scrapping fall football season

With the college football season in serious jeopardy due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Big Ten could be closer to pulling the plug.

According to a report from ESPN, the “vast majority” of Big Ten presidents are in favor of postponing the season while hoping to play in the spring. Yahoo! Sports’ Pete Thamel reported Big Ten presidents and chancellors are scheduled to meet Sunday night.

A Big Ten spokesman confirmed to MLive on Saturday that conference presidents and chancellors were meeting that day but there was no vote planned on playing football this fall. The conference on Saturday morning announced practice restrictions, preventing teams from wearing pads until further notice.

“We understand there are many questions regarding how this impacts schedules, as well as the feasibility of proceeding forward with the season at all,” the Big Ten said in a statement on Saturday. “As we have consistently stated, we will continue to evaluate daily, while relying on our medical experts, to make the best decisions possible for the health, safety and wellness of our student-athletes.”

ESPN reported commissioners from Power Five conferences had an emergency meeting on Sunday as Big Ten presidents wanted to get a feel if the other conferences would also cancel fall sports.

That’s going to destroy a lot of businesses in the college towns like State College, PA.

Point of order - they already approved playing conference games.

Do they use anything like Senate/House/Robert’s rules? If so, only someone who voted on the winning side can call for reconsideration.

Under Robert’s Rules, the motion to reconsider must usually be raised no later than the meeting following the meeting at which the original motion was approved, and possibly during the meeting at which the original motion was approved.

Well I hope you are correct? I just don’t know what heard immunity is with this virus? Flu we have some immunity, but as strains evolve, we also know how to treat it and we do have vaccines that mitigate it.

And I follow football quite a bit, saw my first LSU game in 1970 as a kid.

Hard to say but we shouldn't shut down our economy and our way of life to deal with this virus. Maybe if it was a combination of Bubonic Plague, Ebola and Smallpox.

They lost so much money already due to politics, the virus is just an excuse for cancelling the rest.

Go back and list your numbers as a percentage of the US population at the time. Your scary Covid-19 numbers will look a lot less impressive.

1 death in Indiana per yesterday’s report and it covers more than 1 day I think. The newsreader almost cried at the low number.

Yep - when they make demands, their scholarships need to become worthless...they’re shooting their own asses off...

The left isn’t sitting on the couch worried to death about missing out on couch potato activities. The left is outside, fighting for the cause dujour, and destroying obstacles in their path, defeating their enemies. Us? Worried about watching professional sports and college athletics.

Except for a very few, their scholarships are already useless. Lot’s of “Studies” courses taught by Dr Friend of the Program.

Well I don’t think this is about the Economy. I think we should do all we can to ensure people can get to work and get their Businesses running, and people can get back to earning their pay checks, wages, etc, all with following the CDC guidelines to mitigate COVID-19 Spread. So I am not for closing down the Economy even with this Summer 2nd surge of COVID. Have Businneses up and running, if they violate the CDC COVID-19 protocol, fine them just like you would if they violate other health and safety laws. So I am in agreement on the Economy with you.

However, College football is not the same, we are still talking about 18-22 year old college students. While I love College Football, it has always been my favorite Sport, the illusion of amateurism while true, it is still legally and amateur sport whereby Pell Grants and Educational aide from the Feds and States provides funds for students to first and foremost get a college education, not play sports.

So the legal risks or legal exposure angle is what I think is driving this? What are the long-term issues related to COVID-19 if a Football players gets it and 20 years later we find health issues that shorten life expectancy. Could a similar thing like the Concussion issue with the NFL happen and Colleges, and if State Public University, face Legal exposure???

Understood - the old joke applies - How many college football players does it take to screw in a light-bulb - only one but he gets 3 semester credits for it...
My thoughts were about the scholarships being a free ride for playing football...

You asked what the population of the us in 68-69 and in 57-58.

Excellent question. I went ahead and looked it up. I also calculated the deaths per million population on all of the data points I referenced previously. Info is as follows:

1957 (Asian Flu) Population was 172M, fatalities were 116,000, for a rate of .68 deaths per million population.

1969 (Hong Kong Flu) Population was 202.7M, fatalities were 100,000, for a death rate of .49 deaths per million population

2002 (SARS) Population was 287.6M, fatalities were 0, for a death rate of 0.00 deaths per million population.

2009 (Swine Flu) Population was 306.8M, fatalities were 3,433, for a death rate of .01 fatalities per million population.

2020 (COVID-19) Population of 331M, fatalites are 165,617 (through August 09), for a fatality rate of .50 fatalities per million population.

So, the death rate for COVID-19 is higher than any other pandemic since 1957, with the exception of 1957. However, we’re not done yet. At an average fatality rate of 1,000 per day, we will exceed the fatality rate of 1957 by mid-October.

So, I stand by my point that this this outbreak is significantly more dangerous than the previous ones cited.

You’re absolutely right, there are tons of stories. In addition to the ones you cited, I’ve heard stories about doctors using alien DNA in treatment, and people having sex with demons in their dreams.

Are your anecdotes better than mine? I read mine on the internet, so it has to be true!

You’re right. The population in 1957 (172M) is roughly half of what it is today (331M). And you’re also right that this would equate to roughly 230,000 deaths today - I calculated 223,240.

What you’re missing, however, is the fact that we will never have another death from the 1957 flu pandemic. We will continue to have deaths from the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. We’re averaging roughly 1,000 deaths a day. At that rate (and I see nothing that says the fatality rate will change in the next two months), we will surpass the fatality rate from 1957 by sometime in mid-October.

You’ve lived a long and, I assume, healthy life. Good for you!

I wonder how many people you went to elementary school with could say the same?

The mere fact that you didn’t see any masks in 1957 doesn’t mean they wouldn’t have helped. They just didn’t know better then. Lots of things that weren’t done in 1957 that are done now (use of seat belts, reduction in smoking, measles vaccine, etc.) have markedly improved life span. The mere fact that you didn’t do it and survived doesn’t mean it’s not a good idea now.

The most current data I have (probably for 08/09) shows a death rate of 3 for Indiana. That’s great!

Florida, however, show 91 deaths. Georgia shows 30. Alabama shows 29. And so on, and so on, for a total of 332 deaths, and counting.

We’re averaging 1,000 deaths a day in the entire country.

The America of 1957 was run by the refd-blooded veterans who won World War II. The America of 2020 is run by snowflakes.
