“Oh, Those Loud Black Girls!”: A Phenomenological Study ofBlack Girls Talking with an Attitude
Journel of Language and Literacy Education ^ | Fall 2012 | Jacqueline B. Koonce

Posted on 08/04/2020 8:18:18 AM PDT by 11th_VA

Current research suggests that it is imperative for researchers and educators to pay more attention to the needs of African American adolescent girls and how their race and gender affect schooling (Fordham, 1993; Morris, 2007). The purpose of this study was to highlight the lived experiences of two African American adolescent girls when they used the African American women’s speech practice, “Talking with an Attitude” (TWA), with their teachers...

The findings indicate that the girls reappropriated the use of TWA to resist what they perceived to be hostility and disrespect on the part of their teachers.

Although other races, ethnic groups, and cultures may appropriate talking with an attitude, it has been recognized in the literature as part of the AAWSC and the Black Diaspora, so this study focused solely on African American girls because of its history within this community.

For many African Americans that self-identify as members of the AASC [African American Speech Community], attitude holds another layer of meaning, including to the extent that attitude becomes manifested overtly, through language and kinesics, by a speaker’s ability to talk with an attitude, walk with an attitude, act with an attitude, be with an attitude. In many instances within the AASC, then, attitude actions are marked distinctly and can be read by other group members. These are actions that are learned socio-culturally in socially real contexts (emphasis in original; p. 107).

Yes, well I went to high school with 3000 (78%) African Americans and I can tell you from first hand experience that this is nothing new. They were screaming nonsensical slang gibberish at the top of their lungs 60 years ago. Nothings changed.

You’re right, I stand correct.

My intent was “many or most”

Volume is largely a matter of socio-economics. Across races and genders, the lower the socio-economic class, the louder the volume.

Stopped reading right there. This is nothing more than attempting to excuse the sad fact that children are not being raised to respect others. Heck, a lot aren’t even being raised, period!

Mostly gibberish ghetto-speak. They’re like 4th graders who haven’t learned to read or write and find math impossible. Try having a civil conversation with any of them.

Before Covid I was at a lunch spot and someone (you know who) about 3 tables away got a call and...STARTED USING THE SPEAKERPHONE TO CONVERSE.

I looked at her and asked ‘Did that person call to talk to you or to me?’

She gave me a dirty look which I fully expected and said ‘Me.’

I responded ‘Then why can I hear both of you talking?’

The advent of phone earbuds with microphones (wired or Bluetooth) has also encouraged this yak-yak demographic.

They have occasionally climbed onto the exercise machine next to me at the gym as they have phone conversations (at top volume of course) - so loud that it drowned out the ambient noise of the gym and the machines AND it drowned out my over-the-ears headphones.

Now that I’m riding a bicycle most of the time (gyms closed) I pass them on sidewalks and trails. And, as you may guess, they’re yakking away while walking.

In both of the above instances their exertion level is as close to zero as possible and still be standing/walking upright. The hands flop around as they shuffle along at 1.5 mph.

Perhaps it might occur to them that their ‘exercise’ is wildly ineffective.

On a somewhat serious note, I am convinced that the use of technology, especially where it may be rude, inappropriate or counterproductive, is a phenomenon very similar and/or related to the ‘talking with an attitude’ of the article.

I always wonder who’s on the other end of the phone and if they are also wasting time and ignoring the task at hand while they chat away. Hours upon hours of BS.

Temple, TX has a little over 2,000. . .keeps a big pool of football payers to choose from (it is Texas, after all). High school is on 31st street.

Go to Google maps and take a look and see how BIG the school is.

It was 7-12 and the total was around 3800. My graduating class had 798 students although not all that many graduated. I got a diploma but did not walk since I was working a second shift job in a tile factory.
