CNN's chief media correspondent Brian Stelter may have landed himself in hot water, according to the attorney of Covington Catholic High School student Nicholas Sandmann.
Last week, Sandmann announced that The Washington Post settled the $250 million defamation lawsuit he filed over its botched coverage of a viral confrontation with a Native American elder who had portrayed the Kentucky teen as the aggressor. This followed the multimillion dollar settlement agreement CNN reached with the teenager back in January.
However, Sandmann's attorney, Lin Wood, spotted a retweet from Stelter of a tweet written by attorney Mark Zaid, who speculated about how much money the teen walked away with from the settlement.
"Those with zero legal experience (as far as I can tell) should not be conjecturing on lawsuits they know nothing about. What kind of journalism is that?" Zaid asked. "I've litigated defamation cases. [Sandmann] was undoubtedly paid nuisance value settlement & nothing more."
Wood accused the "Reliable Sources" host of breaching his network's own confidentiality agreement with his client.
"This retweet by @brianstelter may have cost him his job at @CNN. It is called breach of confidentiality agreement. Brian Stelter is a liar. I know how to deal with liars," Wood tweeted with a screenshot of Stelter's retweet.

He’s just a crazy old man whose ancestors walked across the land bridge from Asia thousands of years ago. First peoples, probably so.
The so-called “elder” lied about what happened with Mr. Sandmann and the old man was the abuser.
Stelter is the weakest host on CNN. They are probably just looking for an excuse to can him. It would be fun to replace him with Laura Ingraham. :)
Is that a crime? If not, nothing will come of this.
I guess Lin Wood could seek to reopen the lawsuit if there is a violation of non-disclosure and maybe seek additional damages...or demand CNN separate from Stelter.

We need to explore what options we have to create our own news sources. With the internet it would not be hard to find people all across the world who will act as local reporters. If this can all be done with advertising revenue, then they can share part of it.
Also need to know what the rules are with regards the wire services. My impression is that those who use them can pick and choose what information they use. We could do the same, and select those parts of the wire services info that actually tell the truth (if there is any in their reports).
Instead of people uploading video to YouTube, if we had alternative news sites, they could be uploaded there, and would be exclusive - thus ensuring more traffic for these news sites.
Just thinking out loud. Clearly, we can’t let them continue to control the information and the narratives.
Not to defend Stelter, but he had no knowledge of the settlement amount or any confidential info about it. He was speculating. Sure, he was speculating low and scrambling for momentary political value, but he wasn’t acting on behalf of the network and he wasn’t revealing any knowledge, because he didn’t have any.
That said, I hope he gets canceled for being a general schmuck. I don’t care what excuse they use. These aren’t normal, moral times.
I hear Abe Froman, the sausage king of Chicago, is hiring as well.
