In some important respects the John Brown invasion was a most fortunate occurrence. It has certainly had a very happy effect upon the politics of the country in several ways. In the first place, it challenged the attention of the whole North to the tendency of the ultra-Abolitionism of the day. It showed reflecting men in what direction the fierce harangues and denunciations of the fiery Anti-Slavery crusaders of the North were leading them. And it aroused the conservatism of the North -- the sober, sensible conservatism of the Republican Party -- and led at once to the practical repudiation of the ultra-abolition element which had been stealthily fastening itself upon that party, and assuming control of its policy, for some months previous. It brought the clear, high-toned, national, statesmanlike conservatism of Gov. SEWARD into direct antagonism with the frantic, fanatical treason of WENDELL PHILLIPS and his clan, and the result is partially seen in the position of strength and public confidence held by the Republican Party at the present moment.
