Treasury Secretary Mnuchin: $1,200 checks in August

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Saturday that Republicans were set to roll out the next COVID-19 aid package Monday and assured there was backing from the White House after he and President Donald Trump's top aide met to salvage the $1 trillion proposal that had floundered just days before.

Mnuchin told reporters at the Capitol that extending an expiring unemployment benefit - but reducing it substantially - was a top priority for Trump. The secretary called the $600 weekly aid “ridiculous” and a disincentive for people to go back to work. He also promised a fresh round of $1,200 stimulus checks would be coming in August.

“We're prepared to move quickly,” Mnuchin said after he and Mark Meadows, the president's acting chief of staff, spent several hours with GOP staff at the Capitol. He said the president would “absolutely” support the emerging Republican package.

Mnuchin’s optimistic assessment came before Democrats weighed in publicly on the updated proposal, which remained only a starting point in negotiations with House and Senate leaders in the other party. He said he recently called House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer ahead of shuttle negotiations next week on the broader deal.

The Feds should block all payments to BLM members and Antifa, and anyone who participated in rioting. They have all those facial recognition cameras. They can nail a ton of them.

Most of the jobs are not coming back. Only ones hiring still after 4 months are those offering near minimum wage part-time jobs or sub-minimum wage gig economy work.

Yep. I’d like to see a huge smackdown of any corp that offshores jobs. Tariff the hell out of offshore services. Add some additional taxes to those that still don’t get the message.

There is a reason why these places are full of illegal immigrant labor. No American or legal immigrant will touch these, especially the packing plants.

That money was spent long ago. Now they are just “printing” it as fast as they can.

I see no reason why regular people shouldn't get something if the big corporations are all getting "something"..

but I'd like to see some "thankyou" for essential workers that actually kept this country rolling the last several months....tax holiday would be nice...

Still waiting for my first one.

According to the IRS site it was sent May 22. I never got it.

Then I looked again yesterday. They added a note to their FAQs saying those who the site showed a check sent on May 22 and didn’t get it yet, not to worry. They discovered there was an error and those checks didn’t all go out after all. (People in 21 states affected.)

And it only took 2 months to realize it!!! Way to go IRS!

I’m sure when my income tax is due next April 15th and I discover an error on Jun 15th that I accidentally forgot to send it in. And promise to send it soon, so just sit tight, they’ll be absolutely cool with that.

“ Where have they been hiding this? “

Seriously? Who here does not understand that pretty much every penny the government is handing out is being borrowed, probably mostly from China! They already own enough U.S. debt that they could probably just call in the loans and essentially kick us out. But hey, it was fun while it lasted. Yep, Americans bought a lot of beer, ammo, and drugs with the $1200 handout. This may sound like a fantasy but if people don’t get back to work and retarded mayors and governors stop telling businesses they can’t reopen then its over folks! So don’t get excited about the $1200 you obviously don’t really need but have no choice since trying to send it back would likely get you tagged as a racist, terrorist, homophobic, Hitler loving far right bitter clinger. I suggest you do what I am doing, find a conservative running in a race where your money might just make a real difference in D.C. and send them the $1200. You will get more real “bang” for they buck by doing that over buying more lead (which is probably made in China).

” Where have they been hiding this? “

The Fed is paying it out of the money they have stolen from us for the last 100 years.

Ha all that stolen money is long gone. More like they're pulling this out of your great-grandkids' bank accounts!

Socialism...

And $1200 does not go very far these days.

The looting of the Treasury continues.

We are at 26 Trillion and counting.

Well, it would be nice, but I’d rather see them end this insanity and get people back to work...

Not true. I just got a job after being laid off for three months and it has comparable pay to the job I lost after nearly 16 years with the company. And it’s local, no commute down to Austin.

I would prefer a check for $120,000 myself. Can’t they manage that?

If I did not have to pay SS and medicare for over 40+ years at the top rate, I'd have retired with a $3.3 million payout by only earning a paltry 3% return on investment of my own money.

Just send me my $3,300,000.00 and I'm good to go.

BTW, I'll take it in gold and/or silver, please.

Doing what?

Working hard every day.

In western PA, the signs along the Home Depot road, are Carpenters $35/hr, Plumbers, 30-40/hr, roofers 20-25/hr, lawn care and tree cutters, 18-22/hr.

If any able bodied person wants to do manual labor in Western PA, they can go to work, tomorrow and make around $1,000 + each week.

Please do not tell me there is no work for able bodied people that want to get up in the morning and work hard every day.

If you are a Star citizen, what do you want to do?

Yes for experienced carpenters, plumbers, roofers, other construction work. Absolute shit wages while on training/ apprenticeship. I’ll add welders, electricians and other skilled trades as well. $15 and lower in training wages. Definitely good for a 20 year old. Takes years to make a living wage. Haven’t made wages that low in 35 years.

Able-bodied? Hell, I can’t lift 20 kg repeatedly. A bad back, knees and a crushed left arm due to a drunk driver right after I got out of the Army decades ago seen to that. So I went into software engineering. Use my brain instead of my brawn. So warehouse work is out for me as well. I did try. But failed even the Amazon/ UPS/ FedEx lifting test.
