A city of masks: When the flu tore through San Francisco
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 9-11-2015 | Gary Kamiya

For six weeks during the fall of 1918 and winter of 1919, San Francisco was a masked city. Everyone who lived in or visited town was required to cover his or her mouth and nose in public.

Those who did not were reprimanded, fined or arrested. The streets of the city looked like they were full of bank robbers, surgeons, attendees at a Venetian ball or Tokyo dwellers with colds.

Regarding our medical system: it’s simple to project the numbers of deaths forward, and it factors out the medical system as a factor.

If my uncle had balls he’d have been my aunt. We are not going to see anywhere near that level of fatalities, in fact years from now the numbers are going to be corrected down, long after Trump is out of office.

Masking has been around for while in this outbreak, but the case numbers keep going up.

Where’s the evidence masks are working?

Who made you the final authority? Sorry to have to tell you this, but there are no official numbers for deaths from Spanish Flu. Estimates for the US range from 195,00 to as high as 850,000. Worldwide estimates vary by up to FIFTY MILLION.

We have become a nation of terrified Karens and Chads.

Yep. Worst part is that we are closing schools for a virus that does not affect kids for most part.

Have I ever written that Covid-19 is not a problem? Cancer is a problem. Traffic deaths are a problem. Drug overdosing is a problem. I don’t cower in fear because tens of thousands die from these problems every year. The question is if the “cure” is necessary. Doctors thought wearing funky nose cones full of spices deterred the Black Death but that didn’t do jack shit.

“I don’t believe there will be either herd immunity or a vaccine.”

I really hope the wishful thinking turns out to be true.... I do hear you, trying to keep positive.

The space between two people on one side of that square would be something like 4’-5”.

The streets of the city looked like they were full of...Tokyo dwellers with colds.

SF Chronicle says that they looked like Tokyo dwellers? Imagine if Trump said that.

Did the masks slow or stop the number of infections? Don’t think it did.

First you know that anyone on Free Republic can not present you any official evidence that a mask works, so why ask. For any article I present you, you will counter with an article. We can find articles all day long.

I can give you numbers from Worldometer, but people will state the reports can not be trusted.

You stated the numbers keep going up, I agree the numbers are going up in South Carolina.

I can just tell you what I observed in the State of SC

I can tell you up until President Trump made his statement, maybe 5% of the people in SC were wearing mask. Could this explain the numbers were climbing in South Carolina after lock down ended.

Nobody here in SC believe the virus was real because the outbreak never happen here during lock down. When people came out of lock down they came out with no mask on.

New York had mask mandates since April, they are out of lock down with the new case staying steady and not rising.

The number of people wearing mask is a whole lot higher in SC now since President Trump made the statement on mask.

If we see SC peak and the numbers of new cases start going back down would this be proof the mask is working? Most likely not for Anti-mask league (I like that name)

The average person has so much emotions invested into believing a mask does not work, they will never believe it even if the cases go down.

Me on the other hand will either believe the mask was effected or not effected. I do currently have doubts on the homemade mask but not the N95. I am very interested in the results.

Once people start seeing friends and love ones get sick they will adjust their behavior. No need to scream at them like some do.

Give it about two to three weeks for SC. I think the odds are in favor of the new cases going back down. We will see.

“Yep. Worst part is that we are closing schools for a virus that does not affect kids for most part.”

I am seeing mixed reports on that. They just reported another kid under the age of 9 here in SC. However they do not indicate if the kid had other problems.

I have read science papers stating under 10 are good to go as they can not be infected to the point where they can be carriers.

I say open the schools for kids under 12 with the option of home schools. It is a great opportunity for Home Schooling to grow with less brain washing.

No, but here is the clincher, at least for me.

Even if your not presenting symptoms of an underlying condition, covid-19 may very well bring them to the surface.

For instance, a patient in his mid 40’s, throwing off 100’s of clots, who might never have developed those symptoms, dies of some thrombotic event, but for covid-19. Does that death count as covid or death from a pre-existing condition. Even though they never had signs or symptoms beforehand.

I personally would rather not find out if I have some underlying condition, givin the right conditions (Covid)that takes me out.

Assuming kids have both parents and one of them stay at home.

Thanks for your input. I’ve been watching South Carolina too, along with other states that have had case increases. The states having increases are the states that had it easy until now. It seems that every state will experience a sharp outbreak at some point. The exceptions are the states with less urban areas, it seems.

“I do currently have doubts on the homemade masks but not the N95”

I have read the N95 will not stop the virus itself, it’s too small.
