It is kind of a clever way to both pay homage to George Washington, and not fully change/rebrand to a totally new identity. As name, I agree lame, but as a political statement, it's interesting. Same colors same name, just shorter.

This seems dumb, but it just may be the smartest play. Any name change will be mocked by football fans in general and alienate whatever Redskins fanbase is left.
Call it by the placeholder name for a year and hire a marketing team to revitalize the Redskins name in a year, hoping that this all blows over enough for a nostalgia bid without it being a target for leftist protests that will scare away advertisers. It’s the Dick Cheney VP search of team name searches.
Or, Dan Snyder gets some knucklehead like Bezos to overpay for the team and he leaves the NFL richer than he came in while the league continues to falter.
So with that name, most of the world will think they play soccer (farm club of DC United). Maybe Landover Lambs was not available.

The NFL and AT&T are at the end of a 9 year deal signed in 2014. The current TV deal runs until 2022. That TV deal buffers them from most blowback for their actions, for the time being. It, along with sales of branded clothing, are two of the many reasons the NFL can do fine with fewer butts in seats at the games.
Rumors have it that AT&T is balking at the NFL’s renewal offer. Ratings have mostly returned to pre-kneeling levels but the ratings downturn seems to have made an impression.
Whatever the new deal is will tell us a bit about the long-term viability of the NFL.
