The name Zouave is just now a household word. The occasion of its immediate prominence is, as is well known, the fact that a military corps of youths, hailing from the "City of Skunks," is now in our midst. Attired in singular garb; heralded by thousands of pens, as moral, brave, wealthy, skillful and wonderful, they have come suddenly upon us in the very doggiest of dog-days, and without waiting for rest, refreshment or a barber, have daily, nay hourly, astonished, delighted, surprised the few thousands of Gothams citizens who prefer the exciting sensations of our city life, to the quiet retiracy of a rural retreat. We see in the shop windows Zouave hats, caps, coats, canes, umbrellas and shoes. There is nothing which has hitherto been baptized JENNY LIND, SONTAG, PATTI or HEENAN, but now can be found with the Algerine prefix -- the African cognomen.
