Ed Wallace of “Wheels” on KLIF in DFW likes to bring up how thousands of teenage girls shrieked and carried on about the beetles before they even appeared on Ed Sullivan’s show. The were not on radio at the time.

Hyped up boy band.

Talentless hacks.

Yet their appearance changed the course of rock music.

Wow! You must be one hell of a musician if you can call the Beatles "talent-less hacks".

What is the name of your band and where can I hear you play?

The Beatles were superstars in England way before they did the Ed Sullivan show in February 1964. Arguably the most talented band in rock history.

However, I prefer their pre-1967 output to their post Sgt Pepper output. When they stopped touring, I think some of their creative fire went out.

No, But try this on for size.... Lennon/McCartney are among the, if not THE, greatest composers and song writers of the second half of the last century. Think about it. It's been 50 years since they broke up and their music is still in demand. They even have a significant following amount Generation Z.

Yeah. They were the Milli Vanilli of their day...what’d they have? Like one hit song?

I’m not sure what you are talking about. Maybe a different band called the “beetles” instead of the subject, “Beatles”.

I grew up in that era. I can assure you the “Beatles” were being played on American radio before they came over for the Ed Sullivan show. As with any pop culture phenomenon, yes there was hype, but the excitement about them coming to America was real.

Talentless hacks? Wow. I have had issues with their lifestyles, etc., but those guys affected many types of music in many ways. They started out with 3 chord songs and graduated to fully orchestral. Just because I don’t happen to like anything about the Rolling Stones, I still would not call them “talentless hacks”.

When the average listener, the “punter” as they say, says this or that one is a hack or sucks it’s more or less true. The punter knows what he likes and doesn’t like and that’s that. He’s his own authority.

Moreover I can easily imagine people not liking the Beatles or thinking they might not quite have had all of the talent attributed to them.

But when you call anyone “hack” in a profession you practice and then fail to provide hot links to what amounts to YOUR authority, your own example of what the Beatles SHOULD have done or how they should have done it, you’re kinda’ leaveing out a little something that detracts from any sense of respect for you.

You get checks in the mail for music you were involved in? Writing, producing, arranging, recording? As they say on GearSlutz (a pro audio website) “let’s hear it. “

Talentless hacks.

That will be a minority opinion. The Beatles were a bit before my time, but even I can see they were the most important musicians of the 20th century. Bigger impact than Miles Davis, Frank Sinatra or Elvis. No other musicians reached more people around the world, no other had a bigger impact on Western culture, no others did more to introduce Western music and culture to the rest of the world.

They also wrote and performed some outstanding music which still holds up today.

Beatles are the top selling recording music artists from the second half of the 20th century to the present.

Hyped? Of course. Who isn’t?
Style came in the right time. Bunch of social misfits who had good songwriting and instrumental talents and unique voices and harmonization. Compare them to bands of the time.
Many were one or two hit wonders...except a few...folk artists like kingston trio...peter paul and mary..etc..beach boys...4 seasons...beatles were from foreign shore and were young , energetic, and “cute”, most of their albums had all good songs. They had many many strengths. So they hit it big. Give them their due, props, and kudos. Stones were very , very good also, but had a different style. Credits go to them also. I enjoy both bands.

Watch this...no sarcasm. It’s an analysis by an expert musicologist and composer. It’s a very good, professional documentary and analysis.

Also, not sure if it’s on You Tube, but I saw last year Deconstructing The Beatles by a Beatlesologist...that film focused on their breakout year. Their breakout year was breathtaking in what they did and accomplished.

There will never be another band as great as The Beatles, IMO.
