Those of you who know me know I am an avid motorcyclist. It is my hobby. my recreation, my transportation, my skill, and my therapy. One of my favorite things to do is ride around SE Massachusetts along non-highway roads and just take in the sights.
One of my favorite areas to ride is Duxbury MA. It is an historic seaside community just north of Plymouth, and has many historic buildings related to the Pilgrims. It is also extremely wealthy, and, unfortunately, a hotbed of liberalism.
The "Virtue Signalling" signs began popping up a few years ago. On the vast sloping lawns of the seaside mansions were the colorful signs in 5 languages:
"HATE HAS NO HOME HERE"
"All Are Welcome"
"Don't HATE, Teach Kind"
All the signs were professionally screen printed on waterproof plastic, with metal stakes planted firmly in the ground. They seemed especially hypocritical when placed within close proximity to these signs:
"NO TRESPASSING"
"NO TURNS"
"PRIVATE PROPERTY"
"VIDEO SURVEILLANCE"
"NO SOLICITING"
Now, being a staunch conservative, I have no problem with wealth or private property, so don't get me wrong. It is just that the two different types of signs suggest that "ALL" are not really welcome after all.
After the killing of a Police Officer a few years ago, there were lots of blue signs, lights, and ribbons showing support for the Fallen Officer. Some of the blue, faded ribbons still cling to the lampposts, but, during the quarantine a brand new type of sign has gone up, replacing the "All Are Welcome" signs. These were often wooden pallets, painted white, with a big red heart on them. Some had messages like this:
"WE LOVE FIRST RESPONDERS"
"THANK YOU POLICE, FIRE, EMTS!"
"WE MISS OUR TEACHERS!"
"THANK YOU ESSENTIAL WORKERS"
Those were OK I guess, but now those have been replaced by professionally produced, screen printed, uniform and ubiquitous signs that say:
BLACK
LIVES
MATTER
(Of course, the No Trespassing related signs have remained in place throughout this entire time.)
Just on a whim, I searched the racial demographics of this extremely beautiful, historic, wealthy, and crime-free seaside community. Here it is:
Duxbury Demographics
According to the most recent ACS, the racial composition of Duxbury was:
White: 97.54%
Other race: 1.44%
Asian: 1.02%
Black or African American: 0.00%
Native American: 0.00%
Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander: 0.00%
Two or more races: 0.00%
(((((SIGH)))))
No one thinks they are a hater, and few admit to bigotry.
The implication is almost, not yet, “Unlike my neighbor across the street.”
The signs are spreading in my town.
I am tempted to put up the names of white people killed wrongly by the cops, the names of black children killed in this violent upsurge.
They matter too.
They all matter, but how do you get your foot in the door with bigots?
That is a beautiful home!
....very interesting....!!!! I learn something new every day...!! way, way back in the last century, I served on the U.S.S. Duxbury Bay, AVP (Small Seaplane Teder) 38 - never knew what it was named after....now I know...! thanks.....
Any front yard bathtub shrines in Duxbury?
Exactly.
When one is confronted by a sign that says:
“I AM NOT A HATER”
it implies:
“But YOU are.”
Ive seen that one around town, at the gay house as I call it (rainbow flag).
Like you, I think the people who put them up are phonies. Hate DOES have a home with these people. All you need to do is ring their doorbell as a Trump supporter and see what happens next!
No...you have to go to Hyde park (a neighborhood of Boston) for that.
Oh that rainbow thingy is everywhere, especially on the traditional, steepled, white clapboard, New England churches (mostly UCC, UU, or UMC)
Indeed.
And I am SURE I wouldn’t be “WELCOME” with my black leather, patches, and “BIKERS FOR TRUMP” T-Shirt.
LTOS added to ping list
I know, but I grew up in Hyde Park so it sticks in my mind.
Some of those bathtub shrines are EPIC!
Still...they are more sincere than the Virtue-Signalling signs, IMNSHO.
Thank You, Brother.
I’m still on my 93FXR, and just put on new tires and gaskets.
The motor has never failed me. Tires, Voltage regulators, Gaskets, etc, but the motor? NEVAHHHH!!
Battelle labs, Bayside Marine, the Yacht Club, Snug Harbor post office... Is Talbots still there?
I don’t know about Battelle Labs, but everything else is still there. :-)
Even the cops would Steal a Left.
Well, I learned to drive on a motorcycle in Jamaica Plain (cobblestones, trolley tracks, and Boston Drivers).
My first license said “MOTORCYCLES ONLY”
I can bang a yuwie and hock a loogie simultaneously.
Boston Drivers aren’t so bad...in fact they are WICKED PISSAH.
