MILITARY AFFAIRS: THE SEVENTH REGIMENT AT CAMP SCOTT; Editorial-American Slave-traders (7/12/1860)

The interest which every intelligent American takes in an organized militia service, and which has been not a little quickened of late by the energetic attempts which our English cousins are making to introduce our system into their own country, is not likely to be diminished by a visit to a genuine, soldierly volunteer camp. In camp, for at least a few days, our volunteers are soldiers all the time; they are here given up completely to the military side of life, with no intervals of business or lounging, and it is worth while to know how near they come, in such circumstances, to the regular professors of the noble art of national self-defence. Camp Scott, we think, will satisfy any reasonable critic that there is the making of a good fight for New-York, should the occasion ever arise, in her regimented sons. Once within its precincts, the signs of civilianism disappear altogether; your acquaintances of Broadway and Wall-street have "suffered a war-change" in mind as well as in body, and there is nothing to dissipate the conviction which every soldier, however brief his required terms of service, ought to feel, if he is to be of any use to himself or his country, that "soldiering" is a serious matter.

By direction of the President, Major ROBERT ANDERSON, of the First Artillery, and Capt. ANDREW A. HUMPHREYS, of the Corps of Topographical Engineers, are detailed from the Army, as members of a Commission created by the eighth section of the act of June 21, 1860, to examine into the organization, system of discipline and course of instruction at West Point.(from "Army Matters", on page 2.)
Maybe Maj. Anderson will be rewarded with a nice field command after this chore.
