If you had to pick only ONE great band or musical group of the past 50 years who would it be?

Posted on 07/10/2020 8:18:42 PM PDT by Bigtigermike

I love all kinds of music and I know everyone’s taste of music is different but if forced to pick only one group since 1970 that was awesome, encompassed uniqueness and range and just fun music overall it would be Earth Wind & Fire. I just loved how they mixed R&B, Jazz, Soul, Pop, Latin and Disco and had lyrics to many of their songs that had meaning and message. Maurice White was a genius and his instrumental arrangements for the bands top hits was bar none. Great Car music

‘That’s the Way of the World’ ‘

Fantasy’

‘Reasons’

Getaway’

‘After the Love is Gone’

‘Serpentine Fire’

‘Shining Star’

‘Can’t hide Love’

Boogie Wonderland’

‘Gratitude’....etc

Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays are literally their own category closer to jazz and way beyond pop.
Those first few notes of “San Lorenzo” changed my life. Too bad Pat couldn’t keep the original lineup intact for longer. When Mark Egan left, there was definitely something missing.

++++++++++++

My brain just hasn’t been able to connect to Jazz. I listened to San Lorenzo just now hoping for a new love and just couldn’t get it. I have no taste.

Boomer memories tend to get a tad fuzzy when it comes to music,

I remember listening to the album, “Gratitude,” on headphones when it first came out. Life changing. I think you’re onto something, and could second your choice. Have to think about it a little more. Steely Dan was not a band, per se, but the name is right up there in terms of life with music.

“ Almost everyone is picking bands that are more than 50 years old.“

They took it to mean about 50. Forget it

A few years back while I was teaching at a Catholic middle school, when I got tired of the lesson and the students were zoning out I moved all the desks around the wall and put that along video on my laptop and we all danced around in the middle of the room. Never got caught by the principal or complaints fro parents. A few years later one of the students brought me a vinyl album of them.

I’d have to say the Beatles with misgivings to Steely Dan.

The Seekers. Judith Durham may have had the finest voice of the 60s groups, clean, precise, and a great range.

You beat me to it by a few posts. Few voices matched Judith Durham’s.

“Zeppelin? Oh you mean Led Zeppelin. Yeah I really like him.”

Good, but not as good as Eric Clapner.

This rock band who had several songs that are staples of FM Radio, is about to celebrate their 60th Anniversary, and all the members of the band as of 1970 are still current members.

Name the band.
