Good patriotic films you can watch with your family?
Posted on 07/04/2020 6:50:17 AM PDT by MAGA2017
Can anyone here recommend good patriotic films that would be suitable for a family to watch together this July 4th weekend? I have kids that range from age 9 to 14. Thank you.

If your children are from 9-14, The Patriot may be a bit much. It's an awesome film but the lesson of the movie (freedom isn't free) may get lost amongst the carnage with the younger ones. And while your mileage may vary, if I saw the movie as a full-of-testosterone young teenager I might have felt justified bring a bayonet to school to handle the bullies.
I like Independence Day...yes it's sci-fi campy and there is loss but it handles the subject matter really well. It also shows the USA being saved in part by a crazy guy who sacrificed his life for his kids and nation and a black dude and a white Jewish guy smoking cigars - that can't happen in any other country. Frankly, the only unbelievable thing in that movie is that their computer could log in to the alien computer AND the wireless connection wasn't lost before the virus was uploaded.
For a bit of an off the wall suggestion, you could stream the Schoolhouse Rock collection of American history bits. That's how I learned the Preamble.

Saving Private Ryan
The Right Stuff
Glory
But I would double or triple vote Red Dawn... Nothing more patriotic than high school kids (boys and girls) fighting off communist invaders.

And I love the British officers dressed as “Maccaronis”.

Another good movie (and relevant to the discussions today) is
Glory, starring Matthew Broderick.
It's about the formation of the first Union black regiment in the Civil War.

TCM is showing The Scarlet Coat tomorrow morning (Sunday) at 8est.
Just an FYI,TCM is also showing John Paul Jones today at noon est, 1776 after that, then Yankee Doodle Dandy. Several good ones.
Another recommendation is The Devil & Daniel Webster. I taped it months ago & have it saved. It's not as well known as some movies but it's very good. Walter Huston makes the movie as Mr Scratch & Edward Arnold as Daniel Webster. Webster has a few speeches that make you stand up and cheer!

“1776 will be on TCM this afternoon.”
Have set it to record. Also on TCM today are “Yankee Doodle Dandy” and “The Music Man” — my favorite musical. Love the Barbershop Quarter.

1776, although it is a bit long. My kids always enjoyed itHubby and I just watched this last night. Yes, it is 2 hr. 40 min.; but, I have always enjoyed this movie.
As a side note, I purchased a Blu-ray version of this because I was afraid I wouldn't be able to see it anymore in a few years, the way things are going. I am sure it offends some commie somewhere.
