Posted on 07/04/2020 6:50:17 AM PDT by MAGA2017

Can anyone here recommend good patriotic films that would be suitable for a family to watch together this July 4th weekend? I have kids that range from age 9 to 14. Thank you.

There are tons of 'em.

April Morning (free, on youtube)

The Patriot

Adams (5? part series based on David McCullough's book)

I could probably come up with 50 more. Easily.

This will sound strange, but Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Toward the end of the “The Two Towers,” Samwise makes an incredible speech when all hope seems lost, where he says there will be a dawn and it will be brighter than ever, and that we do these things because there is good in the world that must be saved and preserved.

As he says this, he’s looking at Frodo who is beginning to feel the terrible burden of the ring, but you get the sense that he has finally concluded that even Gollum has good in him.

I'd recommend "Last of the Mohicans," even though it was set in the 1750s during the French and Indian Wars.

The heated exchange early in the movie between the British officer enlisting the help of a colonial militia and the main character of the movie (Nathanial, the white man who was orphaned as a child and raised by the Mohicans) portends the future of North America in a big way:

BRITISH OFFICER (in response to Nathanial's skepticism about having the settlers leave their frontier homes undefended while they were away helping the British defend their forts in upstate New York): "You call yourself a patriot, and a loyal subject to the crown?"

NATHANIAL (who obviously must have been an ancestor of Donald J. Trump): "I don't call myself subject to much at all."

Revolution - with Al Pacino

New York trapper Tom Dobb (Al Pacino) becomes an unwilling participant in the American Revolution after his young son Ned (Dexter Fletcher) is conscripted into the British Army as a drummer by the villainous Sergeant Major Peasy (Donald Sutherland). Tom attempts to find his son, and eventually becomes convinced that he must take a stand and fight for the freedom of the Colonies. He crosses path with the aristocratic rebel Daisy McConnahay (Nastassja Kinski), who gets involved in the support of the American troops. As Tom undergoes his change of heart, the events of the war unfold in large-scale grandeur.

The movie musical, 1776

Yankee Doodle Dandy.

Based on the true story of music composer George M Cohan (though be aware, there is a scene arond the beginning of the movie in which Cohan relates the story of him being born. Cohan says, “I was a good Democrat, even in those days.”

Untrue. Cohan was a diehard, lifelong Republican.
