I don’t know his party affiliation but haven’t looked. I’d guess like his brother he was a Republican too.
I agree. It’s a patriotic song too, and meant as such. Combining it with the Star Spangled Banner is appropriate. That said, the players damn well better stand for both.

It’s in many of our Baptist Hymnals, and has been for decades. It’s a good song, both lyrics and music. Too bad they had to glom on to it make it political.
Sounds a lot like The Congo’s national anthem.
