Speaking of the Native American Indians:
There were some savage tribes and they actually were responsible for the disappearance of some of the other ancient tribes. There were also the “civilized” tribes-moved to Oklahoma.
Hubby is a member of the Choctaw tribe, and when I first got married, his cousin was Chief of the Choctaw nation. Some of his ancestors were also Chiefs.
This tribe was part of the groups that were moved on the trail of tears. The chief at that time was smart, he used what little leverage he had to negotiate benefits such as better education for his people in exchange for peacefully moving along. Also, members of the tribe had converted to Christianity, and the Missionary to the tribe moved with them-he had an Indian wife.
The Choctaws also contributed to the success of WWII as part of the Code Talkers Operation.
At any rate, regarding the “stealing” of the land-purchasing it for beads, baubles, and other stuff—the Indians did not believe that land could be owned—so they thought they were pulling a fast one on the people who were doing this.
So next time someone says Pale Face STOLE the land—just fill them in on the real story. LOL
