The world's largest Confederate Monument faces renewed calls for removal

Stone Mountain Confederate Memorial, a nine-story-high bas-relief sculpture carved into a sprawling rock face northeast of Atlanta, is perhaps the South's most audacious monument to its pro-slavery legacy still intact. Despite long-standing demands for the removal of what many consider a shrine to racism, the giant depiction of three Confederate heroes on horseback still towers ominously over the Georgia countryside, protected by state law. The monument - which reopens on Independence Day weekend after the COVID-19 pandemic forced it to close for weeks - has faced renewed calls for removal since the May 25 killing of George Floyd, a Black man who died during an arrest by a white police officer who pinned his neck to the ground with a knee. The brutality of Floyd's death, captured on cellphone video, triggered a national outcry against racial injustice, and revived a long-simmering battle between those demanding the removal of racist symbols from the public sphere, and those who believe monuments honor the tradition and history of the South.

The stock market doesn’t know the race or skin color of shareholders, nor does it care.

“The American Taliban wants to howitzer Stone Mountain.”

And in case anyone missed it, that’s an allusion to the Buddhas of Bamiyan in Afghanistan.

As far as I know the park and monument is privately owned and is in trust to preserve it. It will be much harder to remove than government owned/controlled monuments.

Never fails to amaze me. The people who fought in the Civil War, men who had to kill their fathers, brothers, and sons, were able to forgive each other after it was over. They were able to come together and rebuild a unified country.

However, the woke of today want to dig up all the Rebs, spit on them, and scatter their bones to the four winds. I see comparisons to Nazis constantly by these idiots, begging the rioters to topple confederate statues. And here is “the news” squirting lighter fluid on the last tiny smoldering embers of that war, hoping to reignite it.

The only way to stop it is to make the Democrats own their history.

That’s an excellent point and one that Republicans should be pounding on the campaign trail.

I’m going to see it next week...I saw it from the air once (it’s visible coming into Atlanta from certain points) but I wanted to see it as it was meant to be seen, before they blow it up.

I’m not from the South originally and have no special regional loyalty to these figures, but they were important figures in American history (because both sides of the Civil War were part of American history) and it just infuriates me that people want to destroy this beautiful monument.

The park is private property and they have a campground, cottages and a lodge for visitors...I’m planning on driving there (about a five hour drive from where I live) and staying overnight. I’m really looking forward to it.

Your point came across very clear. I made the same reference on Breitbart the other day.

“I remember that story I think it was part of a collection of science fiction alternate history stories.
There was another entitled “Custer’s Last Jump”, wherein the 7th Air Cavalry parachute balloon infantry is decimated by a squadron of former Confederate Air Force fighters led by Crazy Horse, lol.
The story is told in the form of extracts from first-person accounts drawn from letters, diaries and newspaper articles of the period.”

Don’t think it is from the same series but I read an alternate history story many years ago where Native Americans did a better job of adopting modern tech. Time frame was set all the way up to jet airplane tech. Europeans were holding on to few coastal enclaves (New York, etc.) Native Americans had superior air power so Europeans could not expand, but Native Americans could not compete with Europeans sea power to totally force Europeans out.

“since the May 25 killing of George Floyd, a Black man who died during an arrest by a white police officer “

So far, so good.

“who pinned his neck to the ground with a knee. “
Not TOO bad except he kneeled on his neck, BUT didn’t “pin it to the ground”

“The brutality of Floyd’s death”
While you might argue the “brutality” of the arrest/detainment, but they are equating his death with the arrest and “brutal treatment of Floyd. WHICH WASN’T THE CAUSE OF HIS DEATH.

“triggered a national outcry against racial injustice”
Well it sure “triggered a lot of people, that’s true.
EXCEPT, there was no “racial injustice” committed against George Floyd, George Taylor, Floyd Taylor or George Kirby!

A WHITE career criminal, habitual hard drug user, high on Fentanyl and Methamphetamine, resisting arrest, would have been treated EXACTLY THE SAME!

YES, EXACTLY THE SAME!

“revived a long-simmering battle between those demanding the removal of racist symbols from the public sphere, and those who believe monuments honor the tradition and history of the South.”

The mostly true and somewhat honest part of the piece.

Flat out stating that they are “racist symbols” is biased.
Should have included “many Black people think...”

They DO “reflect” the tradition and history of the South, not necessarily “HONOR”.

While this piece is an improvement over the totally racist pieces I’ve seen lately, they may just be trying to hide their racist ideology. (racist against WHITE people)

We’ve had this discussion many times. Stone Mountain was a GIFT to the state of Georgia. The terms of the gift require that ANY attempt to remove or deface the Confederate Monument mean the gift is FORFEIT and returns to the private owners.

It cannot be removed. The state can give that land back to the private owners of it, but that’s it.

Suck it Maoists.

Stone Mountain isn’t going anywhere. For one thing we have a law in GA that forbids the removal of civil war monuments. Secondly Stone Mountain is privately owned property.

I have been saying that since Political Correctness first appeared in the early 90s. PC Revisionists put forth the “all about slavery” myth which had not been the majority view in Academia.

I distinctly remember telling everybody that it would never stop at the South’s history and symbols. That Leftists would move on to Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Patrick Henry, George Mason, the Stars and Stripes, etc. All of those people were slaveowners. Slavery existed for 90 years under the stars and stripes and thousands of slave ships flew the stars and stripes while plying their trade.

So no, you cannot just cast off all slavery/racism by falsely trying to project it exclusively onto the South as the Leftists have plainly been trying to do. These were always national problems.

Conservatives who went along with this and even worse, those who joined in in trying to trash the South’s history and heritage were idiots and/or appeasers. Did they think that crocodile they were feeding was not going to turn on them one day? Fools. The Neocons (aka warlike Leftists) like the Straussians have been the absolute worst about it.

The Wikipedia entry for Stone Mountain shows it with the monument already obliterated. Photoshopped.

...cannot unravel the threads without all of the nation coming apart.

That after all is what they are about.
The American people are not a threat to them,
the American form of government is.

By the way....the Confederates were not fighting over slavery. They knew exactly what they had been fighting for. Consider these two quotes.

“Every man should endeavor to understand the meaning of subjugation before it is too late… It means the history of this heroic struggle will be written by the enemy; that our youth will be trained by Northern schoolteachers; will learn from Northern school books their version of the war; will be impressed by the influences of history and education to regard our gallant dead as traitors, and our maimed veterans as fit objects for derision… It is said slavery is all we are fighting for, and if we give it up we give up all. Even if this were true, which we deny, slavery is not all our enemies are fighting for. It is merely the pretense to establish sectional superiority and a more centralized form of government, and to deprive us of our rights and liberties.” Maj. General Patrick R. Cleburne, CSA, January 1864

“I yet believe that the maintenance of the rights and authority reserved to the states and to the people, not only essential to the adjustment and balance of the general system, but the safeguard to the continuance of a free government. I consider it as the chief source of stability to our political system, whereas the consolidation of the states into one vast republic, sure to be aggressive abroad and despotic at home, will be the certain precursor of that ruin which has overwhelmed all those that have preceded it.” Robert E. Lee in a letter to Lord Acton

Just look now. PC Revisionists claim the only thing the South was fighting for was slavery - in the face of tons of evidence to the contrary. The ripping up of the original constitution by reducing the states to little more than administrative conveniences rather than sovereign constitutional actors as they had been....the creation of “one vast (consolidated) republic” as Lee called it has led to exactly what he and Patrick Cleburne said it would.

The unsustainable debts. The oppressiveness. The constant meddling overseas. It has all happened. If we do not alter course, the collapse he predicted based on a careful reading of Greek and Roman history, will happen to us just as it did to the ancients.

But we’re not supposed to look at any of that. We’re not supposed to consider if gosh, maybe Southerners knew what they were talking about. No No. Just repeat the holy dogma “Slavery! Slavery! Slavery!”.
