Dick Van Dyke just paid tribute to Reiner ... calling him his idol. The legendary actor said Reiner had a "deeper understanding of the human condition" in a warm tribute. Carl Reiner, one of the most prolific entertainers in the history of show business has died ... TMZ has learned.

We're told Reiner died Monday night at his Beverly Hills home. We're told his family was with him when he passed.

Reiner was a producer. He was also a director. He was also an actor. He was also a Grammy winner. He won 9 Emmys in over 7 decades. He has more than 400 credits.

I love her, she was my idol as a child. I LOVED the Dick Van Dyke show, but the parts I loved about it were the office scenes. And I love Rose Marie, holding her own with the guys. I’m team Rose Marie, not team Laura!

There’s a good documentary about her life and career that we watched, a person my age didn’t really know her as a child star, so that was all fascinating. And she WAS like her character on the show. She talked about how all the mob guys (who were so much a part of early show biz) thought of her as their sister. She was a right gal, not some floozy dame.

But, anyway, she talked on that show about how she got Morey Amersterdam the part on DVD, and how that made him world famous, and you could tell she was very proud of having done that because world fame was “what he deserved.”

Reiner was a funny guy, but his politics were all screwed up.

Going back through the decades he didn’t seem to be from all his talk show appearances. My sense was exactly yours. One thing I have learnt from the last 20 years or so on FR and other sites is that in the artistic community assume leftist until proven otherwise. It is their default position.

Richie was a whiny little kid who I wished they would lock in the closet. :-))

After the first season, he spent all his time at the Helpers, to keep him out of the way. One whiny, but otherwise whiny kid, and Laura still acted like she was put upon and overworked (even getting a MAID one episode!).
