White People Own 98 Percent of Rural Land. Young Black Farmers Want to Reclaim Their Share.
Mother Jones ^ | June 27, 2020 | Tom Philpott

Innovations by Black farmers remain at the core of sustainable agriculture today.

Black people have largely been expelled from the US agricultural landscape. In 1920, nearly a million Black farmers worked on 41.4 million acres of land, making up a seventh of farm owners. Today, only about 49,000 of them remain, making up just 1.4 percent of the nation’s farm owners, and tending a scant 4.7 million acres—a nearly 90 percent loss.

This didn’t happen by accident. Since Emancipation, Black farmers have had to fight for a share of this country’s fertile ground, due to a history of racist policies and land theft. But modern sustainable agriculture owes much to Black agriculturalists, explained Leah Penniman, co-director of Soul Fire Farm in upstate New York and author of Farming While Black, on a recent episode of Bite.

Ask. Monsanto for reparations. The corporations own a lot of farmland.

If interested in farming, work on a farm and show interest and learn. Maybe you get promoted by the owner to a better job. Also, Save up money you earned to use as a down payment on land or equipment. No bank will lend money if you don’t have any experience or business plan in place.

I do real estate appraisals for farms part time. There are nice farms for sale all over the place and at reasonable prices.

That said, farming is a tough job. You have to be a combination agronomist, economist, veterinarian, meteorologist, chemist, mechanic, engineer, etc., etc., etc.

Frankly, I don't know how anyone does it.

Drove thru BIG chunks of Oregon and Nevada, BLM land. Wide open for farming. Sorta shy on water, but I'll bet a clever farmer could solve that...

Try Fields, OR. There is even kind of a village, there...

Or, there is still free land for homesteading in the Yukon, if you speak Canadian... It's sorta like American, with some extra vowels...

Have relatives who are ALL about the “organic”. They pay through the nose for said products and gripe because they’re “poor”.

$20+ Trillion spent in President Johnson’s Great Society wealth transfers could have bought significant land.... where’d that go?.....

When he was young the great blues artist Buddy Guy literally walked behind a mule pulling a plow. He said in the burning hot Southern Sun, the mule would pass gas in his face or drop wet souvenirs from his rear end every couple of minutes. “There is absolutely no worse smell than that.”

These punks had a delay in a video game rebooting last night and think they’ve suffered through hardship.

“...Wait a minute. Were they really “expelled”?
Or did they pack up and move to the cities hoping for a better life?....”

Exactly.
They knew first hand how hard it was to work the land and the risks involved in it. The industrial revolution was kicking off and offering a lot more secure money for workers than any farming effort would have provided at the time. They voluntarily left in droves for those new jobs.
This crap is just like reparations....they really have no legitimate claim.
And anyone who supports, or falls for this line of BS, is ignorant and utterly stupid.

BTW, I live in South Georgia and we have some beautiful land for farming.

Mexican immigrants (legal ones) are getting into the farming business in a big way.

They work hard, scrimp, and save...and often start with tiny little farms.

That's the way it is done.

Very few corporate farms around here (except for a few blueberry operations).

The left and their media propagandists are doing to White people what the nazis did to the Jews.

It's not going to work out the same.

Oh bull shit. I’ve worked with a lot of older black men in tech or the military who grew up on a farm and wouldn’t return to that life for anything.

I thought that they got 40 acres and a mule.
My family did not get a dime, they had to work for it and make a living.
Cut off EBT, TANF, and any other government welfare if they feel that way.

Family on my fathers side left Tennessee (some say Alabama or other states, research now points to Tenn) starving after the Civil War, for Texas. Married into mother’s family (we got close related 2nd cousins some by adoption) who had been in Texas for awhile. Pont is they got no 40 acres and a mule, just the cheap land they could find in Northeast Tx.

Anyone notice an inconsistency in that passage?

LOL! You really can’t make it up.

A few months ago I was in a grocery store that also sells prepared foods. I was in line, ordering a slice of pizza for lunch (it had prosciutto on it), and the guy behind me (who was in an expensive running suit) ordered a slice of ‘vegan’ pizza. The guy behind the counter put both slices in the oven to heat them, and the guy who ordered the vegan slice went bonkers. Said he didn’t want his vegan slice anymore because it had touched my slice.
