Yes, but additionally, actual innovation occurred over the last century that hardly anyone is working agri now. Only a few people are needed to provide massive amounts of plenty.
That is technology. Some ended up Big Farm, but either way, technology reduced how many people even have to OWN a farm to “sustain” the economy/needs, much less work it.
In 1920, nearly a million Black farmers worked on 41.4 million acres of land, making up a seventh of farm owners.
I suspect most of these folks were sharecroppers.
Just like most white farmers.

My family did not get a dime, they had to work for it and make a living.

Like the gang-bangers in the hood would happy to eke out a simple living on a 40 acre farm. They’d be starving and demanding welfare checks within a month. The ones that did actually farm would be growing cash crops like Marijuana, Coca and poppies.
Liberia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa have tons of land to farm.
