Family on my fathers side left Tennessee (some say Alabama or other states, research now points to Tenn) starving after the Civil War, for Texas. Married into mother’s family (we got close related 2nd cousins some by adoption) who had been in Texas for awhile. Pont is they got no 40 acres and a mule, just the cheap land they could find in Northeast Tx.
The 40 acres and a mule thing was a promise made by General Sherman during the Civil War. Blacks never got what was promised. President Andrew Johnson reversed Sherman’s order, giving the land back to its former Confederate owners.
You thought wrong. The forty acres and a mule was just a campaign slogan. Never happened.
