Innovations by Black farmers remain at the core of sustainable agriculture today.
Black people have largely been expelled from the US agricultural landscape. In 1920, nearly a million Black farmers worked on 41.4 million acres of land, making up a seventh of farm owners. Today, only about 49,000 of them remain, making up just 1.4 percent of the nations farm owners, and tending a scant 4.7 million acresa nearly 90 percent loss.
This didnt happen by accident. Since Emancipation, Black farmers have had to fight for a share of this countrys fertile ground, due to a history of racist policies and land theft. But modern sustainable agriculture owes much to Black agriculturalists, explained Leah Penniman, co-director of Soul Fire Farm in upstate New York and author of Farming While Black, on a recent episode of Bite.

What share? I don’t have a share either and I am white.
It’s really simple, just go buy a farm. There’s always prime farm land for sale somewhere. Along with the equipment.
But my gut feeling is anyone wanting a farm for the sole reason they think they have been cheated out of one knows no more about farming than Bloomberg. It’s very high tech from planning, to seeding, to harvest, to marketing. I’d like to see these clowns play the futures or operate a combine.
I saw a bunch of typical (yes, stereotypical) grungy ‘shoppers’ in front of a vegan store yesterday, and I couldn’t help but wonder if they’re ‘down with the revolution’. In the meantime, this store sells vegan cheese (made from nuts) and other items for a LOT of money. They seem to be doing well, so these ‘grungy’ (unwashed hair, pants too big, etc.) vegans are keeping them in coin.
The hypocrisy and irony of the youth who are ‘down with the revolution’ is beyond intolerable and sad. If I were in the military right now, and was asked to deploy to a dangerous place, I would have to ask myself whether it makes sense to put my life on the line for people who hate me and who are actively trying to destroy what I am supposed to be fighting for.
No kidding.
I am growing tomatoes and peppers in buckets and dont even want to deal with all of this ..calcium does this...nitrogen does that...etc.
and the bugs
and the disease
Wait a minute. Were they really “expelled”?
Or did they pack up and move to the cities hoping for a better life?
Well, I think I want to “reclaim” Soros’ wealth. Why the hell am I not entitled to his wealth? He's rich and I am not and it is just not fair!!!
What share would that be, that “belongs” to the young black farmers? Is this South Africa? What possible claim do these morons have to the farmers’ land?
Well, they need to fight it out with the ‘immigrants’ from Mexico, who have moved into agriculture to the point of buying farms.
I doubt a lot of black people actually want to go out and farm. Probably better than living in blighted crime riddled inner cities though.
i posted something the other day from a vegan that was distraught over a lion eating prey
said we taught animals to hunt and we could teach them to just eat vegan...there is plenty for all
I laughed out loud.
They WORKED on the land; they didnt OWN it.
Dipshits.
There are fewer farmers in general. The numbers have been going down since 1900. It’s tough making a living in farming.
If they can directly trace their heritage to slaves, maybe. Butt then the “native Americans” may want to claim it back.
I’m looking to oblige.
“Black people have largely been expelled from the US agricultural landscape”
What a crock.
Of course, twist language to make it seem they are SOOOO deprived.
Expelled? They voluntarily moved to cities, partly to get away from racist issues but also to find work.
As for “forefront of innovation” - uh, sure. All 2% are doing the innovation of all.
The exodus of persons of ALL ethnicities has been going on virtually unabated for the past century, not just blacks. Almost always it was for economic reasons, for black as well as the vastly greater number of all other ethnic groups. Trying to wrest a living from the soil, when you have to buy everything retail and sell everything at wholesale, is not a recipe for quick return, and most of the youth look at this lopsided economic equation, finally deciding that life on the farm is not for them.
Nobody was “expelled” from the land. They fled for greener pastures, lured by promise of much greater remuneration for much shorter hours.
No, youre missing the point. They want it for free.
Im shocked...shocked I say.
And as far as the “98% rural land” - does that mean FARMS, or just “rural”? Because I assure you, much of “rural” land is just “small” homesteads without farms.
Zimbabwe and South Africa. Difference here is that we’ll shoot the bastards instead of being their victims.
