One of the largest political meetings ever held in Kings Country was held by the Republicans last evening, in City Hall Park, to ratify the nominations made by the Republican National Convention at Chicago. A few rockets, a calcium light and a band of music, aside from the speaking, were all the attractions offered to induce a large attendance. At the stand in the Park the meeting was organized by electing GEORGE FIELD, Esq., of the Thirteenth Ward, Chairman, and the usual number of Vice-Presidents and Secretaries. During the meeting the "Wide Awake" Battalion of the Rocky Mountain Club arrived, one hundred strong -- each man dressed in glaze cap and cape, and bearing a torch-light, to the staff of which was attached a small American flag, escorting a large visiting delegation from New-York, and another from the Eastern District. They were accompanied by several hundred members of the Rocky Mountain Club, and were preceded by a band of music. Closely following them were the Ashland Club, 250 strong, with music, escorting a visiting club from New-Jersey, and the Second Ward Club, seventy-five strong. By this time (9 o'clock) there were more people in the Park than could possible hear the sphakers, and it became necessary to organize another meeting in the Ashland Club "Wigwam," on Fulton-street, opposite the City Hall. A meeting was organized there by electing WM.B. LEWIS, Esq., Chairman, and other officers. The Wigwam was soon filled, and addresses were made by EDWARD FITGH, Esq, of New-York, WM.B. LEWIS, Gen. DURYEA, Mr. ULLMAN and others, and resolutions heartily indorsing the Republican nominees were read and adopted unanimously at both meetings.

“Battalion of the Rocky Mountain Club”
Never heard of them. What did the Club do during the war?
Split, half to the Union, half to the Confederacy?

Maybe a tanker from the Rocky Mountain State knows about them.
Hey Homer, what’s that book on Lincoln you show every once in a while?
Is that the best written and most accurate portrayal of Lincoln that you know of? I’m interested in reading a good book about him.
I post excerpts from “Lincoln,” by David Herbert Donald, and “Team of Rivals,” by Doris Kearns Goodwin.
Lincoln, by David Herbert Donald.
How do feel - is it as good as any and better than most?
I’m not a good person to ask. It is the only Lincoln bio I remember reading, so nothing to compare it to. I will check in with some more expert students on twitter and get back to you.
Interesting discussion about whetherthe cost of Central Park was worth it, or should future generations pay for it.
Given the context, it appears to be a New York based social club. It might have been a predecessor to this that I found in Wiki:
The Rocky Mountain Club was incorporated in New York City as an "Eastern Home of Western Men" with the purpose to "create good-fellowship among the members and advance the interests of the Rock Mountain States." John Hays Hammond was the only President. The original directors were: W. B. Thompson, A. J. Seligman, John Campbell Cory, B. B. Taylor, Frederick Russell Burnham and J. J. McEvelly. Theodore Roosevelt was a prominent member, along with U.S. Senator Thomas Kearns of Utah and U.S. Senator W.A. Clark of Montana.
