Great suggetions! Been out of the game for awhile and hadn't even thought of the newer calibers or availabilty of .30-06.
How about 7.62x54? Newer gun or rebuilt sniper. Used to get Mosins for about $100. Though not sure I'd use them for a sniper :)
Mosins are NOT sniper rifles. 7.62x54R cartridges are generally surplus and not very accurate.
The price of Mosins, while still affordable, have gone way, way up in the last few years. And they’re running out of stock with retailers who sell them as C&R pieces. A mid-grade, arsenal-refurb Mosin whill run you about $359 or so, if you can find one, but that’s generally just the rifle. I jumped into the market for one back when they were plentiful and dirt cheap - I got a hand select ‘31 Tula with a hex barrel, the cleaning kit, oil/solvent can, sling, bayonet, and ammo pouches for $99, plus shipping and transfer fee. And matching serials at that. But the cost for the rifle with all the bells and whistles now is such that you really should just invest in a decent, white bread AR, unless you’re really jonesing for a Russkie bolt action. I keep mine for the actual curio value. I don’t plan on picking off someone at 1,000 yards, and it’s about useless for home defense (unless you use it as a club). I figure it’ll come in handy if a rabid bear wanders into my yard.
Yeah, get a Mosin:
